I don't know if it would drop that quickly. I do my interferon shot on Friday eve and cbc and neupogen shot on Monday. Mondays ANC levels are always much lower than Thursday's cbc.
If possible, maybe you could do the cbc the day prior to the interferon shot to see the difference.
Smart move on reducing to a 40 hr week since rest may become more important as you get further into trt.
You said ANC drops quickly after interferon shot. It might be my problem because I did my cbc test 4 hours after interferon injection. Could it be the reason while it tanked so much?
Thanks for your advise. I work 2 jobs 60 hours a week and have worked like this 4 weeks in Tx. My Hgb is 12.8. Its dropping slowly but I know it will drop below 10 eventually. I just decided to reduce to one job 40 hours a week and get enough rest for this tx.
My problem is that neupogen has more severe sx on me than interferon. Neupogen creates this fever feeling within me. Its awful to feel that way.
I can't find the research but I've read in several places that
low neutropils from interferon is considered a good indicator of the treatment working.
So don't worry. It's difficult but a good sign.
BTW: I'm on week 15 of 24 and just reduced my interferon to 135mg.
I'm tired of the neupogen carousel, have been und since week 4, am a small person, and most importantly, feel its the right thing for me to do.
The NP gave me 4 neupogen injections of which I used 2 in 2 weeks but instead of the WBC going up it tanked.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
It depends on the size of the injections. Since my ANC tanked around week 8, I've been on 2 injections (480 mcg) per week. What I've noticed is that my ANC drops quickly after the interferon shot and slowly rebounds during the week. As OH noted, I've stopped the second shot per week since my ANC has often been over 500. It's nice to finally be down to one neup shot per week. I didn't want to lower the interferon dose, especially early in trt. The ANC does jump around a bit. I've been fortunate to have little or no sides from neup. Good luck.
Sry to hear your dealing w low counts. Get lotsa rest. I'm glad ur dr is on it!!! Transfusion time?
I dumped labs about week 4. Procrit has me at 11 now. Take care. Orphanedhawk - I didn't know u were so low!! Whassup w THAT? I tries to read old posts I missed. iPhone is so tiny n eye fatigue sets in.
Karen :)
The NP booked me for cbc test next week. Nice to read that your ANC jumped to 1000 even when you reduced the neupogen. Thank you very much for your input. I will keep you posted next week after I get the result.
Hi,
I'm geno 2 and doing SOC. Since my first week, I've been dealing with low wbc, though its the level of my anc that determines whether or not I take neupogen.
First of all, I'm assuming you are talking about 300mg injections.
When my anc, is below 500 ( which would be a wbc of about 1.4) I take neupogen. My doctor specifically said to take it prior to my interferon shot.
I do interferon on Thursdays. Neupogen on Wednesdays.
I'm also doing weely cbcs mainly because of the low neutrophil issue.
Are you only doing them monthly? I think you can't just take neupogen without doing weekly cbcs to know what's going on.
It's strange stuff. I'm told it doesn't stay long in the system.
The first week, my anc was 500.
I took 300mg, and the side effects were so strong. ( I'm a small person) Next week labs were again 500.
In tears, I asked my doc if I could reduce my neupogen.
He let me drop it to 150mg. So I did it. Next week, my anc was 1000.
Does this make sense? Doesn't make sense to me.
No, I've never heard of anyone doing more than two shots per week.
I know of no way to beef up wbc without nuepogen.
However, there's little reason to do it as long as your anc is above 500.
The other option is lowering the dosage of your interferon.
And of course, there's a chance it just doesn't work for you.
Good luck and let us know how this gets resolved.
