ALT/AST: Have you have these tests taken more than once?
The ALT and AST tests are liver enzymes. This means that liver cells were damaged at the time of the test. This does not mean anything one way or another about your liver's ability to function - it only means that something is stressing or killing some of the liver cells. The cause for the cell damage could be several things, depending on what your were doing up to the night before the test. If you were drinking more than a small amount of alcohol, or taking Tylenol or prescription medication that affects the liver, you would expect these two enzymes to be elevated. Or could be related to HCV and your liver. The Bx will tell the story. When you get your Bx results back you'll know the real status of our liver and how much your liver has been impacted by the virus. It takes decades and decades usually for HCV to destory your liver.
Keep reading, posting and learning. It takes time to get over the initial shock. You are doing all the right things. I know it feels scary but you are on your way to dealing with this virus in the right way. When it gets overwhelming. Take it one step at a time.
