72 ALT and 68AST what does this mean?

Recently diagnosed with Hep C and going for Liver Bx next Friday and will be starting treatment. My doctor told me today that my blood test was elevated 72 alt and 68ast? Hope I have it right, wish I would have bought a notebook and will do so to keep track of my journey...but tyring to find out how elevated I am...also type 1b and 2million +....my doctor stated that 1b is rather hard to treat and we shall see as we go along with treatment how well I will react....have found another site, called "Liver Pool" that have been a great support in the last two days of my worries....but great to know there are other sites to go to for information......thank you and look forward in hearing from you...meme1952

You are doing all the right things to best take care of yourself. Keep up the good work!

Your in the same boat as most of us in the U.S. Genotype 1 and high viral load. There are many people with similar status who as being successful with their treatments. Keep reading the different postings. You can learn a lot from others experiences and support.

Your getting all the correct data you need to educate yourself about your current condition before deciding to treat or not treat now.

ALT/AST: Have you have these tests taken more than once?
The ALT and AST tests are liver enzymes. This means that liver cells were damaged at the time of the test. This does not mean anything one way or another about your liver's ability to function - it only means that something is stressing or killing some of the liver cells. The cause for the cell damage could be several things, depending on what your were doing up to the night before the test. If you were drinking more than a small amount of alcohol, or taking Tylenol or prescription medication that affects the liver, you would expect these two enzymes to be elevated. Or could be related to HCV and your liver. The Bx will tell the story. When you get your Bx results back you'll know the real status of our liver and how much your liver has been impacted by the virus. It takes decades and decades usually for HCV to destory your liver.

Keep reading, posting and learning. It takes time to get over the initial shock. You are doing all the right things. I know it feels scary but you are on your way to dealing with this virus in the right way. When it gets overwhelming. Take it one step at a time.

Hang in there.
