Hello, that's a horrible feeling, not being able to sleep. Not to mention that lack of sleep can leave you wide open for catching all the colds and flu bugs going around. You have got to talk to your doc and let him know how serious you feel about this, sleep deprivation is something most docs understand.
There are all kinds of remedies out there "that are not addictive" tell him how this is affecting your "awake" life and I'll bet he will help.

Rabbit, I slept ok during tx except for waking five or six times to pee. After tx I experienced about three months of sleep being screwed up bad. It passed and once again I sleep like the innocent babe that I am. It will pass for you also I would hope. Frank

It took me about 5 mon. off of treatment to have my sleep normalize.  Even Ambien was not working.  Unfortunately, I've been on several treatment rounds so this means it's been lot's of years of having screwed up sleep.  When I came off of my last treatment, I was so hyperactive.  In fact it's happened the last 2 times that I came off.  I could not sit still if my life depended on it.  Talking super fast, etc.  And the insomnia.  I swear, coming off of treatment makes me like a bipolar person in a manic phase.  Then, that went away about 5 mon. post treatment.

Try Melatonin.. It is sold over the counter in ANy drug store or supermarket, and is located with the vitamins and supplements. This is nonaddictive, and is derived from the actual substance the body NARURALLY produces to promote sleep.

It is really good stuff, and all I've ever used during tx, and post.

Have you had your thyroid checked lately? The hand shakiness, muscle weakness, and difficulty sleeping are all symptoms that could reflect thyroid problems (as I am just now finding out myself.)Tx can cause an auto-immune disease, such as Hashimoto's, that can affect your thyroid and produce all sorts of symptoms. Might be worth checking if your doctor hasn't already.

We own a hot tub and do "therapy" nightly.  It really helps with the sleep.

Snook, please in the future refrain from advising people to take anything as you are merely a child and certainly not a licensed medical professional. Melatonin is very liver toxic and certainly not advised for those with liver complications.

Warnings:

Before taking Melatonin, tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding Do not take Melatonin if you have liver disease or neurological disorders, like seizures (uncontrollable shaking)
Do not take Melatonin if you have depression

Try progressive relaxation exercises before bedtime where you sequentially relax different parts of your body. If you can't find a class, tapes are available on the net. One good source are classical yogic school like Integral Yoga or Sivinanda. I learned at Sivnanda when the then Swamagi was still flying around in his Peter Max painted airplane which tells you how long ago that was :) The breathing exercises can be very helpful as well but may be too stimulating for near bedtime. Also, if you have the time and money,  you could look into taking Alexander lessons.

And, of course, there's always Camomille tea.

First, let me just applaud our liberal politicians and agencies for allowing feeble minded individuals such as yourself computer privledges to access the outside world..It must be lonely and frustrating only being allowed a few minutes computer time a day in the sanitarium. And I can honestly say, it is an HONOR to be the focus of your privledge time..

Second, maybe you should check out the Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, or basically ANY other site, and read up on the supplement. There is ANOTHER supplement, Valerian Root, which promotes sleep, and it is thought to be liver toxic.

Here's a link for you ole' buddy. http://www.mskcc.org/mskcc/html/11571.cfm?RecordID=508&tab=HC

It's a shame, I feel I wasted all my money paying for consultations and office visits with Schiff, when I could have just pulled up a chair and listened to you.. LOL!

Keep dwelling in your self delusion, and personal inadequencies! One day you'll measure up my dear friend, one day!!

Regardless of the name dropping one with his world famous doc, Melatonin has caused serious liver injury to those suffering from HCV, including liver death. Rather than defend a stupid post with your usual anti-liberal babblings, why not worry about those who your dangerous suggestions may hurt. One may be lead to believe that like most conservatives, life is far less important than seeming to be correct all the time. I do trust you did read my comments about Hillary Clinton as to your assumption that the next President of United States had something to do with the HIPAA laws when in fact it was Bush’s Dad and the republican congress that passed that legislation. In fact to date most of your political statements are incorrect as well as your statements dealing with HCV. It really takes so few moments to check things out before one posts, why not make the attempt the next time your feel the desire to inundate us with your lack of knowledge.

to date my friend, YOU have yet to stump me on ANY discussion. I know that is why you come to this forum, in a desperation attempt to bait me into engaging in your demented illusional games.

I did see your blog on Hillary, yet felt no need to embarass you, or attack you such as YOU have continuosly done towards me. Besides that, THIS IS NOT THE PLACE!

It is a shame to see the desperation that the Delphi community has sunk to. I know you miss my logical explanations and itellect, but the ENTIRE community you represent in TAINTED!!
The agenda MIGHT have been sincere at one time, but has since been lost.

Again, I guess you failed to follow the links I posted above, as seems MANY Universities and hospitals use Melatonin.

Keep digging that hole my friend, soon it will be toooo deep to climb out.

My little friend, your delusions as to your assertion that I have anything to do with other forums is again your own personal delusion. I have been a member of this forum for many years. You are as per the usual, out of your league, this I suspect may be the need for you to play Doctor. Your claim that many Hospitals use this sCAM medication for those suffering with liver disease is as outrageous as most of your political comment. Did Rush tell you this? Remember the first rule of holes is, STOP DIGGING SUNSHINE. Apply that to yourself, as again you are very wrong with no semblance of fact to back up your suggestion that those suffering from HCV to ingest Melatonin. There is a shortage of available livers NOW, one should not be putting stress on that supply by playing Doctor.

The facts speak for themselves, as not only are your political discussions tainted with political comment from your heroes Peabody Bill and Rush Limbaugh, it seems you have moved up to endangering people with HCV with your comments as to what they should ingest. Your narrow-minded political opinions only hurt you, whereas your new need to play Doctor is dangerous.

I would stronly advise anyone to disregard Snooks medical suggestions and place as much creedance his Dcotor playing as most to do his cut and paste political comments.

Andy...I've not read any comments from you before.  It seems like you threw the first stone here...if you don't agree with someone why not say it but don't be demeaning.

Snook...is there any truth in what Andy says about melontonin (sp?)?  If so present your research like you always do.  I have always appreciated your HCV info.  Also I didn't realize that you are to the right...I tend to lean to the left and I still like you.

Let's continue to support each other through this horrible disease.

Mike, I have no need to throw stones, as Mr. Snook is most effective at reducing his own arguments to a shrill moan from the uneducated right.

If you feel the need to see who is far more credible when it comes to HCV, feel free to email me at ***@****.

For anyone interested, or hesitant about the substance...The two links I posted above are posted on prestigous schools and medical centers, not just blogs. One is the Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and another in the University of Maryland official site.

The following link is a Faq page about the substance, which originates from an article published in Newsweek.

Sorry if there was any forms of miscommunication on my part, as I am not "playing" Doctor as another member has suggested. My intentions where to merely offer a "personal" suggestion, of a substance that worked for me, nothing more..

You may be surprised as to how many take me seriously...but really who cares, then again FYI, as there are NO studies that have been done on the effects from Melatonin and liver disease for obvious ethical reasons. There are numerous warning for those with liver disease to avoid this product.

Melatonin

Other Names: MEL, MLT, N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine
When should I be careful taking it?
Although melatonin may be given in hospitals to premature infants at risk of developing lung problems, the use of supplemental melatonin for children is not recommended. Because naturally-produced melatonin has a role in the development of sexual organs, melatonin supplementation could interfere with normal sexual development.

In high doses, melatonin may hamper the ability to get pregnant by decreasing female fertility. Women who are trying to conceive should not take melatonin. Because it is not known how melatonin affects pregnant women or the fetus, melatonin should be avoided during pregnancy.

Melatonin is broken down in the liver, so individuals with known or suspected liver diseases should avoid taking it. If liver function is diminished, high levels of melatonin could build up in the blood, possibly leading to unwanted side effects.
Melatonin may promote both immune response and inflammation, making it inappropriate for individuals with autoimmune conditions. Various autoimmune conditions include:
"Is melatonin associated with the development of autoimmune hepatitis?" Melatonin is a neurohormone produced by the human pineal gland that plays a role in the regulation of many physiologic processes and has been proposed as a therapy for everything from insomnia to metastatic carcinoma. Melatonin is available in the United States without prescription, and adverse effects appear to be uncommon. However, because melatonin appears to have immunomodulatory properties, the potential exists for the development of autoimmune-related side effects. We describe a patient in whom characteristic clinical and laboratory features of autoimmune hepatitis developed after beginning melatonin therapy for the treatment of insomnia. Liver biopsy demonstrated histologic features of autoimmune hepatitis. Rapid symptomatic and biochemical improvement resulted from the initiation of immunosuppressive therapy; however, hepatitis recurred after the withdrawal of steroid therapy. The temporal relation observed between melatonin use and the development of autoimmune hepatitis raises the possibility that the drug might be involved in the pathogenesis of this patient's autoimmune disease.Hong YG, Riegler JL Department of Gastroenterology, Wilford Hall Medical Center, Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, USA., J Clin Gastroenterol 1997 Jul;25(1):376-378, PMID: 9412927, UI: 98074407

.....well, at least seems to be for rat livers.  Read further:

Melatonin prevents experimental liver cirrhosis induced by thioacetamide in rats

Adolfo Cruz1, Francisco J. Padillo1, Eva Torres1, Carmen M. Navarrete2, Juan R. Muñoz-Castañeda2, Francisco J. Caballero2, Javier Briceño1, Trinidad Marchal3, Isaac Túnez4, Pedro Montilla4, Carlos Pera1 and Jordi Muntané2

Abstract: Liver cirrhosis is a critical stage of chronic liver diseases that can produce liver failure, portal hypertension and hepatocarcinoma. Sustained oxidative stress plays a key role in cell damage and fibrosis induced during liver cirrhosis. We evaluated the effect of oxidative stress regulation by melatonin on the development of parenchymal destruction and stellate cell activation in experimental liver cirrhosis. Melatonin was administered to rats with liver cirrhosis induced by thioacetamide (TAA) for 1 or 3 months. Liver injury was assessed by serological analysis, as well as hematoxylin-eosin staining and the in situ apoptosis detection assay in liver sections. Oxidative stress was evaluated by lipoperoxide and reduced glutathione levels, and by the measurement of catalase and superoxide dismutase activities in liver and serum respectively. The activation of stellate cells was evaluated by α-smooth muscle actin expression in liver sections. Our results showed that TAA induced oxidative stress with extensive tissue damage and enhanced α-smooth muscle actin expression in liver. Melatonin prevented the oxidative stress-related changes associated with TAA toxicity. In conclusion, the study showed that melatonin prevents the tissue damage and fibrosis associated with TAA-induced liver cirrhosis in rats.

By the way, Rush told me that Melatonin only protects the livers of Republican rats (like me an Snook), so you're probably better off avoiding this particular supplement.

I highly doubt you actually know what a Republican is or actually means. It certainly has nothing to do with the current GOP in the United States. Sugesting all are Liberal based on the fantasy of one little boy is shows a definate lack of simple reasoning.

By saying you highly doubt that I "know what a Republican is" is proof of YOUR lack of reasoning skills.  What a dumb thing to say.

So what did you think of the rat study?  Your insults weren't effective in distracting me from the fact that you didn't even acknowledge it. Can I assume that the study has put you in your place?  Or would that be my lack of simple reasoning skills tricking me again? LOL
