HCV a good thing?

Took afternoon off to get some tree stump splitting done while temps on 60's, as it's already dropped to the 30's in a couple hours as cold front moved through.  Went to hitch up splitted to ATV to pull around back.  Splitter lurched forward as I approached ATV and my middle finger got slammed between tongue of splitter trailer and the protection bar on back of ATV.

Fortunately no broken bones and main tendons undamaged.  But laid a 1 inch gash across lower back of finger between knuckle and midlle joint of finger.  Blood was really flowing as I rushed to house to get help.  When I was able to get bleeding to stop momentarily by rinsing under cold water as I applied pressure, I seen it was laid open to the bone.

Went to ER to make sure nothing was broken and to get the stiches I knew I would need.  Desk nurse didn't seem to understand what I meant when I told her I had a bleeding wound and was HCV positive.  She simply asked if it was still bleeding, and I told her that I didn't think so.

But the two medical sales people must have understood me because when I turned to fill out the admission form, one literally jump backwards a good foot and the other almost fell over her as he scrambled to back away from me (kind brought a smile to my face as it felt like I was Moses parting the Red Sea).

Well if you're ever up this way in the winter, give a shout and we can go drive across some lakes in my Suburban for old times sake <G>.

Was a tradition to go to the TC's after Thanksgiving each year. More than once got caught in snow those weekends.

Hope you can manage to get the procrit to the right place.  It may have been a bad day on tx, but it's one day less now.  I NYgirl had a finger incident recently too.  May be it's an unlisted sx.  Hang in there GO.  I lived not far from you (in SD) for many years.  This is always a nice time of year, then watch out!

Actually a friend had to drive me to the ER as I was to nausiated to attempt driving myself.  I thought for sure I broke it because that's the only time I've ever gotten that nausiated, but in hind sight it probably came from seeing the bone of my finger exposed through the gash.

Also, it was a nice balmy 67 F when I went into the ER and a blustery windy 49 F when I left 2 hours later.  Yet another shock trying to get to the car as I didn't have a jacket or anything.

Unfortunately it also is my injecting and writing hand and I'm supposed to take one of my Procrit shots tonight.  It will be interesting to try and draw a vial and a half for the injection and then try to inject it.

I've also come to realize how important my middle finger is when it comes to trying to hold a pen and write.  Fortunately my index finger is fine, which is all I need to click a mouse and type on the computer for my job.

Needless to say yesterday was one of those very odd days when a bad day away from work was worse than a good day at work.

good grief!  not sure splitting logs is a good tx chore.  Glad it turned out okay.

I know what you mean about the hep C -- it sure seems to me like the medical population is not too savy.

Hahaha!! Too funny! I can see it now driving down the freeway. I can just imagine all the Hep C treaters on the road with you flipping them off! You are lucky to be alive, GO! I think you should head up the Halloween MH parade. That will make a statement.

Just so I get the visual right...after leaving the ER in record time you drove home in the nice Minnesota fall weather, car window open, with your middle finger splinted, raised up and probably resting on the steering wheel.  Do you know how many people you flipped off today?   Say, it wasn't your injecting hand, was it?

Fortunately nothing broken, everyone else I encountered seemed knowledgable and took precautions to contain any blood. Only needed 3 stiches, and only damaged tendon is not very critical to overall movement (starting to hurt like a mother now though as local is wearing off).

The amazing thing is that I was in and out of the ER in the fastest record time I have ever experienced.  Folks waiting for admission when I entered where still sitting in the lobby when I left.  I'm almost certain that after I told the actual triage nurse about my infection and pulled out my paperwork to show her latest CBC labs and such, that I was put to the top of the service list there to avoid having a Hepper with an open bleeding wound hanging around too long.

So, I guess in some cases having an infectious disease can be a good thing when it comes to having to visit the ER!!

BTW, in talking with the ER doc when he inquired if I would be seeing a doc anytime soon and I told him I had a meeting with my HCV doc on Friday, he commented on how fortunate I was to be in the hands of one of the most highly respected well renowned doctors in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area, including those at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester as well, particularily when it comes to anything dealing with blood, liver, overall gastro/entro, and transplantation.  It was kind of reassuring to hear another doctor speak so highly about the one I'm seeing for HCV and a bit more at ease that if I am able continue with him until dragon is slayen I probably have my best chance of achieving that goal without having to leave the area.

wow- that sucks. i hope you got some good painkillers ;-). sorry, that's the way i'm programmed to think. i really hope you're ok. and as much as i would like to fault those people who freaked i really can't. i wouldn't want to catch hcv, if i didn't already have it. take care, and be careful!
