Liver biopsy and sedation

Just woke up from a lovely Demerol high provided for my biopsy.  It didn't hurt at all.  But the nurse told me that I was fortunate because my doctor offers sedation -- not all of them do.  I asked her why not, and she said they just don't.  Are these guys sadists, or what?  It reminds me of a pediatric dentist I went to as a kid who refused to give novocaine, and this was back in the days of the slow drill.  So thus far I'm very happy Kaiser assigned me to this doctor, whose name is Amandeep Sahota.  I'm just praying the remainder of this journey with her remains so positive.  Now I'm sitting on pins and needles waiting to hear the results.

Yes, I felt the shoulder pain as well, within seconds after the biopsy.  They immediately gave me demerol, and I went to sleep.

Referred pain not deferred. The term applies to any pain that originates in one spot but is felt in another.

When I had my first they put me OUT, so moving and whining not a problem, and by the timeI woke up it almost time to go home. I have had them done with nothing and I've learned to hate the phrase "slight discomfort"

I was recommened a drug called VERSED (also called the date-rape drug). You are still a bit awake so you can respond to the doctor's instructions but there is no pain and it wears of quickly. Works like a charm - so I am told.

They aren't sadists really - you can't have a liver biopsy done properly if you can't hold your breath and "don't move".

So they are stuck listening to us whine and complain.  I did mine without anything at all and it didn't hurt really at all.

Hey, so you had one of those "Marathon Man" sessions as a kid too? Did someone say, "Got Sadists?"

I had my first Liver Biopsy in 2001.  I was mildly sedated and had pain in my right shoulder that took my breath away.  They  gave me additional meds to help.  The needle mark was nearly undetectable.
The second one done in 2005 the provided not mild sedative and slow to offer pain med for the shoulder pain. During the test it felt as if I had been kicked in the rib cage.  I lost my breath and began to sob.  I had a deep blue and purple bruise for 3 weeks.  I'm not sure why different doctor use different methods.  But I will not use the last one again. I have to pay for each test because I have no ins.  I won't pay for that again. van

I've had 2 liver biopsys.  Both without sedation (but they used a local anasthetic).  The first one went well, no problems at all.  The second one (2 yrs later) wasn't so good. Evidently, some bile seeped out of my liver as I was biopsied and it gave me severe pain in my right collar bone/shoulder area and I was having a hard time breathing. I also got very stressed when this happened. They gave me morphine which helped a little.  Also, it took a week to 10 days to get my results.  Good luck!!!!
