Prognosis for End Stage Cirrhosis

Close relative is on Liver Transplant List.  Current symptoms extreme uncontrolled edema of abdomen, legs, genitals.  Abdominal, leg and lower back pain.  Unable to walk unassisted due to swelling. Unable to do physical therapy.  Had 3 episodes of ammonia-induced confusion/drastic mental changes.  From this stage, any advice on how much time he has if no liver available?

end stage cirrhosis - do you mean decompensated cirrhosis or end stage liver disease - has he been assigned a meld score yet - if not thats a very good idea - his symptoms indicate decompensated cirrhosis

I do not know the answer to your question, and I truly believe no one can tell you for sure, not even doctors -- the survival drive and human spirit within each individual cannot be measured.

The "end-stage" of liver disease is very unpredictable -- my hope is that your family member is made comfortable as much as possible during the wait. I do not know live-donor is an option for your family member, but it may be something to pursue if the transplant center has the capacity to perform such transplants.

I do send prayers to you and your family member and hope that the 5th call will be soon and it will be the right liver.  Best wishes.  ~eureka

Sorry boss walked by so I hit send.

Anyway, best of luck.  I hope and pray that somehow a liver comes through right away and it is a perfect match!

this disease ***** - people just don't understand how very very much.  The person posting right now about not wanting to do treatment because when they are already cirrhotic should pay attention to this and see how fortunate they really are!

It's such a shame that people don't understand the need for being an organ donor more. I mean if you dn't die in the hospital they take out all the parts for the autopsy anyway right.......what do you need them to put them back in for!!!!!!!!

Thank you for your reply.  He is seeing a liver specialist and has had 4 opportunities for a new liver to date, but none materialized.  Just real hard to watch.

Hard to say how much "time someone has". Everyone is different with this disease . the symptoms you describe can be controlled with drugs. it is important that he is seeing a hepatologist (liver specilist).

Hope that a new liver can be found soon.

prayers going out to your relative....
