Kaiser won't let me see a GI Specialist until I go to a Class

Do I have any legal rights in demanding that Kaiser let me see a GI specialist for Hep C treatment without going to the Class they say I need to attend before I can see the specialist?  I have known about my disease for over 20 years and have regularly kept informed about treatment options.  Just recently some very good drugs have come out that have great success results but are very expensive so now I want to consult with a GI for my treatment options.

I DON'T WANT TO GO TO A CLASS at Kaiser.  This is a personal issue with me and I can't even comprehend going to a place where many others will know I have the disease.  I believe treatment options and discussions should be between me and my doctor only.

My primary Kaiser DR. is the one who suggested I see a specialist but then signed me up for a class.

Any suggestions?

Kaiser has a complaint line.  All you have to do is call that line and within 24 hours you will get an answer.  The recording says so.  Don't hesitant to call this line.  Kaiser does act on your concerns.   Personally I don't care for Kaiser but grew up on it and know the ropes.  Call the complaint line.

Best to you

Not to entirely dispute your statement, but: "Sez exactly who?

Well....I guess what Gilead reports on their new drug :

Gilead’s once-a-day hepatitis-C pills are extremely effective, with success rates of between 94 and 99 per cent, but their cost has sparked an outcry among doctors and health insurers and triggered questioning from senators. A 12-week treatment of Harvoni costs $94,500 — or $1,125 a pill

Cost now makes this drug out of the reach of most but am hoping for this to change???

I'd call to speak to someone who listens well, that given the stigma of the disease, it is not in your best interest to attend and can they make a special rule to absolve you from having to attend. It's a violation of your medical privacy. Let them know that. Be nice but firm.

Hi LK

Is this a class of many people or just you? Is it possible the class is only for you wiht the nurse rather than a classromm setting of some kind?

Express your concerns about anonymity.   This is a free country (wishful thinking) and in my view no one can suggest you must attend a public forum. Personally, I would extend my foot as it relates to privacy laws.
Unfortunately with the stigma of Hep C our voices are rarely relevant.   Stand your ground and insist this be a closed matter.

It might be a needless waste of time.

Might be the best thing you ever did.
