Treatment for Hep C type 2b.

Hi, I am a 58 year old male living in the UK and have type 2b Hepatitis C. I also have scarring to my liver. I will be starting the interferon treatment in about 4 weeks and have been told that the success rate is only 50% and treatment lasts for 48 weeks. Given the numerous articles relating to potential hideous side effects of interferon I would like to know if there are alternative treatments. My consultant says there are none for my genotype but having read many articles online it seems that new drugs like Sofosbuvir are suitable. Can anyone please comment on this?

I am shocked that any doc nowadays would recommend 48 weeks of ifn, especially for geno2.  I can't imagine any reason except the price of Sovaldi.

I am also in the UK and getting the same sh**.  The new drugs are being rationed for cost reasons and the docs are doling out the ifn like we are still in the bad old days.  Don't take it and risk the side effects.  We don't have to any more.  If you can't get a Sovaldi / Riba combo in UK, go to India where it is available now.

Hello , as mentioned above , riba and Inf are not the best choice here for you .
Sofofosbuvir / sovaldi and ribavirin for 12 weeks should do the trick for you .

i honestly dont know why your doctor is even suggesting inf and riba for geno 2 .

maybe u need a diff doc !!

best wishes and good luck .

Thank you Kim. My only stumbling block will be the cost of Sovaldi but I am adamant that Interferon is not the way I want to go, so thanks for reinforcing my opinion.

I am also geno 2 and by the way is the easiest genotype to treat and cure.
As Hrspwrguy has laid out to treatment plans I'm in 100% agreement to NOT take Interferon.  In the US I believe it has been shelved and taken off the market because of the horrific side effects.  I'm my humble opinion it is a dangerous drug and can have long lasting issues.   If you go to the "Post Hepatitis Treatment Forum" you will read some of the testimonies.
The best option for Geno 2 is Ribavirin and Sovaldi .   The length of time is typically 12-16 weeks.  I was treatment naïve and took it for 12 weeks without problems and cleared the virus.
Best to you
