My Mum Started the tripple therapy on 12th May. i noticed today that her eyes are yellow and also her skin in yellow.
Is it serious, what need to be done in such situations. She is feeling very week. Any suggestions what we can do to ease the disconfort and weekness.

Hi I was thinking about you and your Mum, I am so glad you took her to the emergency room.
Please have her drink a lot of water to help flush the medication out of her system.  As I had said before I found that this was a severe reaction, it was listed in the site that I had sent you.
I am not a doctor however I would think that she will need to recover from this first before they do anything.
Then perhaps she can be put on one of the newer medications.  You had mentioned that her doctor said she had to try this first.
She should now be eligible for the newer meds.  There is a lot of financial help out there if she doesn't have insurance.  Even if she had insurance there is still financial help.
I am sure others will be a long to help and I will search for it as well.  Please let us know how your Mum is doing and what her doctor says, if her doctor is not a hepatologist, please find her one.  She will need close supervision during her next tx by a liver specialist.  Where do you live? Perhaps we can help you find one in your area.
Take care, thank God you were there for her
My best

Hi I see your Mum is 1A. I have copied this message from Hector.  I hope he doesn't mind.  I believe this would be what your Mom would take after recovering

"The European regulator in January approved Sovaldi (sofosbuvir) for use both in combination with pegylated interferon alpha and ribavirin in patients with hepatitis C  If this is the treatment your mother doctor will be using this is the correct treatment for her. Or some combination of this drug with others.

The most common adverse events (≥ 20%) for SOVALDI + peginterferon alfa + ribavirin combination therapy were fatigue, headache, nausea, insomnia and anemia. While many people experience some side effects on this treatment very few every have to stop treatment because of them.

The first-generation protease inhibitors telaprevir (Incivek or Incivo) or boceprevir (Victrelis) that the others are mentioning should NOT be used for treatment of genotype 1 HCV infection in the EU.

The European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL) has issued new guidelines for the treatment of hepatitis C, which recommend that wherever possible, patients should be treated with the newest direct-acting antivirals. The guidelines also recommend physicians should "mix and match" antivirals from different companies to get the most potent regimens.

Good luck to your mother.
Hector"

I looked up info, it looks as if your Mum would take the Sovaldi, Riba, Peg, for 12 weeks.  Each tx is individualized so I am not positive.  I saw a person on here who could not take the peg so had to do Sovaldi and Riba for 24 weeks.  Her doctor would decide.  I am glad to hear the doctor called.  When I treated there was an emergency number I could call though I preferred to talk to his nurse as she was much easier to talk to and seemed more knowledgeable :)

Hi Olga, sorry I did not see where you were from.  I panicked when I saw your Mum was yellow.  I have never heard of anyone turning yellow while on tx.  Yes, she will be weak and tired.  Did they tell you what her hemoglobin was?  If that has dropped it will make her very tired.  Mine was 14.8 dropped to 9.7.  I could barely walk.  My legs were very weak and in fact if I stood for too long my feet and ankles would go numb.  When the hemoglobin gets low our body is not getting enough oxygen  When I did I would get very out of breath and it would take a long time to recover, hours.
When I called the doctor they told me to lay down.  I am very glad to hear that your doctor is aware of what is happening.  I am so sorry for what you both experienced.  If you are able please try to keep copies of your Mum's blood work.  It can be very helpful.
I think her doctor had mentioned that she had to try this first.  So...I would imagine that once your Mum recovers she will put her on new meds. They are not as hard on the body, don't have the harsh side effects and are a much shorter treatment.  It depends what Geno type she is.  You may have said, I will go look.
Thank you so much for keeping in touch.  I bet you are exhausted.  Take care of yourself.
My best

Make sure your Mum's doctor is a hepatologist, a doctor who specializes in the liver.  Call him/her today and explain what happened over the weekend so that he/she can advise you.

If you can't reach her doctor's office and the on-call doctor, please take her to an emergency room, preferably one that is associated with a research based/ university based medical center.  But she needs immediate medical attention.

Thinking of you, your Mom, I hope you have gotten medical attention.  Did the doctor mention that during tx water is essential?
Yellowing of skin and eyes is a serious symptom.  If you took her to the hospital they could help her.

Acute jaundice is a medical emergency.
She needs to have immediate medical care.
Contact a doctor ASAP or take her to a hospital.

Jaundice is a sign of severe liver dysfunction. Treatment with peg-interferon and ribavirin can cause liver decompensation or liver failure in certain individuals with advanced liver disease. Here in the US, people with cirrhosis of the liver are advised not to use this treatment because of the risks of serious medical issues caused by this treatment.

The American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD) and Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) say...

"Although regimens of PEG/RBV plus telaprevir (Incivek) or boceprevir for 24 to 48 weeks using RGT are also FDA approved, they are markedly inferior to the preferred and alternative regimens.

These regimens are associated with their higher rates of serious adverse events (eg, anemia and rash), longer treatment duration, high pill burden, numerous drug-drug interactions, frequency of dosing, intensity of monitoring for continuation and stopping of therapy, and the requirement to be taken with food or with high-fat meals."

Cheers!
Hector

Hi again Olga,
I read your first post, and I see now that your Mum is on triple therapy with Incivek, Ribavirin, and Interferon.  Jaundice is not a normal side effect of this therapy, and as Dee said can be a serious condition.  This is a difficult treatment and can be very hard on someone whose liver is already not working well.  If your Mum has Cirrhosis, and she is taking triple therapy with Incivek, and she is jaundiced, I think it is best to call her doctor's office and find out what to do.
Please make sure she doesn't take any Tylenol, have her drink a lot of fluids, and find out from her doctor's office what to do next.

Hi Olga,
Can you tell us more about the triple therapy that your Mum is on?  Can you tell us the names of the three medications?
In any case, yellow skin and yellow eyes is a sign of jaundice, Jaundice is a condition in which there is too much bilirubin and a sign that your Mum's liver is not able to perform all of it's tasks.
Jaundice can be a sign of a serious problem.  It could be an indicator that her liver is beginning to fail, it could be a sign that she has a gall bladder problem or a problem with her pancreas.  Or it could be an adverse reaction to her treatment medications.  Is it possible that she may have taken acetaminophen?  Acetaminophen can also damage the liver, especially in someone whose liver is already compromised.
Other symptoms to watch for may include dark urine or pale stools.
As Dee said, please contact your Mum's doctor's office and find out what to do in an emergency today.
Again, please let us know which three medications your Mum is taking, and perhaps we can find more information.
