suppliments and treatment

My husband and his doctor have discussed that he takes supliments.  However his doctor has not made any direct statements on yes or no to continueing taking Maitake Mushroom, Shiitake Mushroom and Saw Palmetto.  Does anyone also take these supliments and have any of your doctors stated if it is alright while on treatment or stop?

Remember when in doubt - it's best not to take something.  Better to be cautious rather than take something that might effect the interferon in any way and not every supplement has been studied.

Of course I"m assuming he knows NO Iron supplements - that is a big one.

Good luck with his tx!

Thank you no one seemed to have the info I needed but you two and it really helped as my husband starts his treatment today.  And thank you fretboard for trying to find that link for me.  I have found so much information here that has been very reliable.

Yes, your husband will be better off not taking that saw palmetto.  I read about it a long time ago and I can't find the link now, but here's another that shares a little information.  Also, just so you know some doctors don't want their patients taking any supplements during tx because it may affect the blood levels.  Personally I don't think it matters that much, but I don't know for sure.

The  Mushrooms (Maitake, Shiitake) should be OK and may even help with his white blood cells. I wouldn't take Saw Palmetto though.
