Could this be HSV2

My daughter is sexually active with one boy and about a month or so ago my daughter got a huge painful boil on her private area and when I took her to the GYN she prescribed bactrim and said she didn't feel like this was MRSA. It took two weeks and that boil has gone away but has left an ugly scar.  Her boyfriend does have MRSA. ( we found out to late) This has totally freaked me out but the Doctor said that MRSA is everywhere and we can take care of this.  Two weeks ago she showed up with a pimple with a white head on her inner thigh that was surrounded by a slight rash.  I took her back the GYN and had this cultured for MRSA.  The next day as we were still waiting for cultlure results she got another small white head boil on her butt cheek/thigh where her panty line would be.  The culture done on her thigh area came back positive for MRSA.  By the time the the culture came back the MRSA infected area was healed leaving a slight small scar.  My question is about the pimple that showed up on her butt/thigh area the next day.  She got sick with sore throat, headache swollen lymph nodes in her neck, body aches, etc. prior to this pimple showing up.  She said the single pimple on her butt itched more than the others and seems to feel different.  I had her cover it up with a bandaid assuming it was MRSA. Two or so days later  the whitehead of it was gone. (it did NOT look like a clear blister head) She said the bandaid pulled it off.  This pimple showed up Wednesday 3-2-11 and she said today that it has scabbed over and still itches. She has complained lower back pain and muscle weakness in her legs but this isn't that unusual for her. I haven't slept since I found out she contracted MRSA but now thinking she could also have contracted HSV 2 is killing me inside!!

In the mean time I'm sick with worry!! Everything I've read says this could be herpes but one Doctor on here gave me some hope by saying flu symptoms usually show up after blister appears. One single blister not a cluster with a white pimple looking head. Grasping for hope!!  She only got the one blister on the crease of her butt/thigh.  Any hope that this is not herpes??

Thank you!!

Thank you Grace!  It hasn't been easy she usually feels comfortable to come to me because she knows I love her unconditionally.  We don't always agree on things but I'm her mother and want what's best for her.

Kudos to you for helping so many people on this forum!

looks like they use labcorp and quest labs for their testing which are both reputable labs.   labcorp uses the captia test and quest uses the herpeselect.

if you stay on that site a few minutes, you get a discount too...he he he

the only drawback to that package deal is they don't include hsv1 testing. to me if you are going to bother to test for hsv, you should get tested for hsv1 and hsv2 both.  otherwise no issues with it and it is a decent price. I recommend he calls and sees if he can add hsv1 testing to that package and make sure he asks for the discount too of 10% they offer on their website!!

has he had other partners prior to your daughter? were they protected?

also I don't think I said it before but kudos to you for being open to your daughter talking to you about all of this :)  I'm sure it's a tremendous source of support for her as well as someone who appears to have a very sound head on her shoulders to give her and her partner advice :)

Thank you Grace for your help!

I went to this site and called the number they had listed. http://getstdtested.com/free-std-clinics.php/Maryland-MD

They charge $195 for Herpes Igg test, HIV, GON/Chlamedia.  Does this sound reasonable? These kids have their own credit card that's not the problem.  Finding a reputable fair place for a minor to be tested without parents finding out seems to be challenging.  No wonder the spread of std's are so rapid. I asked them how long they have been in business and she said a few years.  I had to ask her the name of the company because it's not on that website or any that I could find.

you can go to a clinic and pay cash - if your local planned parenthood offers herpes blood testing, they are very understanding about why you don't want mail sent to your house.

Most online testing sites charge a credit  card and won't take cash. I couldn't find their site online to check to make sure their price is reasonable and that they are offering the right testing.

also you have HIPAA rights to medical privacy even though you are a minor. You'd have to notify the clinic as well as your insurance that you are over 14 years of age and request full privacy from your parents. His parents would still get bills but they won't have as many details on as well as if they call, no one can give them more details. It's a perfectly good way to irritate your parents but you can do it.

If you are 17 and would like to be tested for herpes without your parents knowledge what are your options? The boy is willing to be tested but doesn't want his parents to know.

There is an anonymous testing site online called PinPoint Med where you pay a fee but you have to say you are 18 (they don't check it ID) they send you to the nearest lab, they give you a website to look up your test results.  Has anyone heard of them?

Most people test positive by 3 months. Hence why we tell people to wait for 3 months after last sexual encounter to have the test done.  Each person is different some people take 4 months and some can take 6 months.  Keyword there is SOME.  Most are ready by 3 months for accurate test.  Your doctor just needs to order a type specific IGG blood test.

How accurate is the HSV1 and HSV2 type specific blood test?  How long do you have to be infected with the virus for it to show up on a blood test?  I think I read somewhere that there are only 2 test that are FDA approved to determine type specific herpes.  What test should I ask the Doctor to use to best determine  HSV!/HSV2?

Thank you gracefromHHP!

I did want to ask you if what I described on her butt/thigh panty line and her symptoms sounds like HSV2 had I not mentioned the MRSA?

My daughter had the gardasil shot and when we went in for the first boil she was tested for std's.  I thought they would have tested her for HSV as standard testing but they didn't. Her boyfriend has not been tested yet. They both agreed to not to be sexually until he has been tested and she knows both are okay.

yes I am in the medical field.

symptoms on the buttocks do last longer and feel different from symptoms on the panty line for instance. The skin on the buttocks is thicker and things tend to stick around there longer.

just to cover the bases , has your daughter and her partner also had std testing for other std's as well as their gardasil shots?

Thanks grace for your quick response!  Are you in the medical field?

The Doctor said that we are doing everything possible to prevent spreading MRSA in our house and to others. Bleaching all of her towels, keeping her laundry in a separate bag sanitizing railings door knobs with bleach wipes.

I wrote boil on her butt cheek/panty line when it was a pimple nothing that resembles a boil.

odds are this is all mrsa and not herpes but certainly she and her partner can both get tested with type specific herpes igg blood tests to see who has what and go from there.

have you looked online or did the clinic give you the information about how to keep mrsa from spreading in a household? there are particular things you should be doing with her laundry. She also shouldn't be sharing towels or washcloths either.
