Do I Have HSV 2

I met a woman online and on our first date Friday night, after a bottle of wine, we had sex. It consisted mainly of penis to vagina penetration with a condom, but also very intense oral sex given by me to her lasting an hour or more in total (if it's any use, she had a very sour taste inside, more so than I've experienced),

including all over contact with my tongue and her genitals and at times, her anus (I didn't notice any lesions on her),

and a normal blowjob from her to me. Additionally, there was unprotected rubbing of penis against vagina for a time, and a single unprotected partial penetration of penis to vagina during that time.

The next day, my lips were tingling, and so was the head of my penis (they still are but less so). I also notice patches of white infection in the back of my throat in several places. It seems to be beneath the skin, as it doesn't wipe off.

Worried, I went to a lab late Monday afternoon for a blood / urine test. It had only been a bit more than 72 hours, I'd say, after exposure.

4 days on, I still have the tingling / burning though less so, I also have a creepy crawly itchy feeling at times in various different places including scalp, legs, feet, anus.

I called her this morning, Tuesday, when I told her my experience she apologized, and mentioned she has HSV 2, that she got at age 24, I believe she's had it 15 years, she said the last outbreak was in January. She mentioned she was feeling irritated, due to the sex, by not tingly as would normally signal an outbreak to her. I didn't ask her prior, and she didn't tell me. I blame myself.

My urine test came back negative, still waiting for blood / western blot.

I will follow up in a month should the results be negative.

Do I very likely or definitely have HSV 2? So far, no outbreak, no signs of lesions that I can tell.

Could my symptoms be symptomatic of something else? What else should I expect? Feeling really bummed out. Had the normal STD screening a few weeks before and was free of all tested for STDs I think HEP and HIV mainly.

Thanks.

I think I would understand them more if I had no symptoms.

Thanks, I understand, but can't help to try and anticipate what the result will be.

I am preoccupied with it, since it would change my life.

I tell myself I need to accept I likely have it.

Just a gut feeling based on the tingling and burning on tongue, lips, and penis,

all points that touched my partner (who is positive for hsv 2) without a barrier,

the mouth to vagina for an unusually long / intense period 1 hour+.

I did get the results back for the blood test taken 52 hours post exposure,

which I think can only be used as a baseline, or as a pre exposure reading

since no antibodies will have been produced yet

(though prodromal symptoms had begun)?

I read these as negative for both 1 & 2?

HSV Type1/2 Combined Ab, IgG by ELISA ARUP 50286 0.35 IV

HSV Type 1/2 Combined Ab, IgM by Elisa ARUP 50641 0.41 IV <=0.89 IV

The prodromal like symptoms seem to have reduced significantly by 5.5 to 6 days post exposure,

and after 2+ days of taking meds. No other obvious symptoms beginning of day 6.

* I just don't understand the optimistic numbers by you, and general unconcerned feeling

one of my doctors (not specifically versed in STDs) had,

given my partner's status, my exposure, and my symptoms

- which you did say could be something else bacterial/fungal,

my doctor who I mentioned above, hinted they could be psychosomatic.

I understand people accept this as relatively common, and that could be a reason there is not a lot of concern?

I am just trying to understand the optimistic numbers, e.g. what science or statistics is it based on.

There is no way you can work through anything that will help. You cannot replay or throw the dice again. The odds of infection genitally were probably 1/2500 genitally and 1/5000 orally in advance of the event.

You are infected or you are not. There is no amount of thinking you can do that will change that reality. You need to accept this. Only science will tell you the correct answer.

All you can do is swab lesions that emerge and have a blood test at 12 weeks.

Personally, I would not take the antiviral, you have no diagnosis.

Update, long winded, apologies...

I did some homework and think the exposure occurred Saturday morning likely from 12:00 AM - 2:30 AM

I looked in my firefox history to deduce when my symptoms began.

I think the risky sex (unprotected oral, me to her) started at the beginning. So exposure could have happened at 12:00AM Saturday,

the penis to vagina partial and single condomless penetration (head and small amount of shaft), and rubbing, happened towards the end,

let's say 2:15AM.

This after sex that left my partner irritated due to using several condoms,

some without enough lube and one with raised bumps for "pleasure."

Grace mentioned the poster's condition sounded like a "mucocele" - I will be looking that up - any info appreciated.

then ever since I've been searching like a mad man.

It looks like I had symptoms that prompted me to search (burning lips at night....but no sores....very depressed...)

online 34.5 hours later,

this is closer to the 48 that is reported as characteristic.

But possibly, the earlier search "Genital Herpes HSVII", 11 hours after sex, was due to some concern re: symptoms.

My symptoms (at least last night) seem to not occur if I'm sleeping or immediately on waking,

it seems I need to be on my feet, moving around to feel the symptoms.

I went to a urologist this morning at 11 for an exam. He said he didn't see anything that looked like herpes on my penis;

so far, there is nothing characteristic.

He suggested 200mg acyclovir 5 times a day for two days. I am taking it every 4.8 hours.

My lips and tongue (like a burn after too hot food now) are still tingly, warm, a little raw, as is my penis, 5 days in.

If the acyclovir relives the symptoms, the doc said it could

be an indicator that I have it... or that whatever I have has run its course.

I took a pee test again, and it came back neg for active

infection in urethra. But I have been drinking a lot of water (not sure if this is a symptom), and this was not my first stream of the day.

He didn't do a blood test, because I mentioned I had one (still waiting on result) on Monday, 8/11 in the late afternoon.

Will repeat in 1 month if neg.

So far, I have taken 2 acyclovir  pills.

I have also been feeling a little run down, possibly feverish, headachy, but also anxious, so not sure how much is psychosomatic.

Partner confirmed this morning that she doesn't take a suppressor as of now, and her last outbreak was actually in Feb.
And that she gets them 3-4 times a year. Worrisome because it seems she'd be due for one.
But, she said they are not predictable. And that she has not had one since the sex we had.
She said she'd had sex only 3 times since an STD test in April that was neg (except for HSV-2 I presume)

I have noticed just now on my tongue a patch of strawberry colored taste buds, I guess they appear normal, or maybe slightly inflamed,

but, I also noticed one had turned a darker color, almost like dried blood, but it is also more or less the same size as the "normal" looking ones.

Yes that is correct, HSV1 antibodies are quite effective in taking the edge off HSV2 infections. It is suggested that half or more of people with HSV1 do not even notice when they are infected with HSV2, but it is not clear whether they ignore the mild symptoms they do experience.

With no form of HSV at all, then it is very likely that a primary HSV infection would be a very noticeable event and include lesions. It also means that 12 weeks is a conclusive point for testing. Westernblot requires 16 weeks.

Thanks for your reply, it sounds optimistic, I hope you're right.

I think I'd been negative for both 1 and 2, not sure they were the more accurate of the tests though, and hadn't been tested for either in a few years.

I understand people with 1 have less severe initial symptoms if they acquire 2?

The chances for a single episode are very small. Herpes symptoms do not appear the next day, 2 days minimum. Your symptoms sound like the typical new bacteria, fungal issues that accompany a new relationship.

No symptoms in terms of lesions within 12 days is also a good sign.

As you have had it confirmed that there has been an exposure, then testing is a good idea. However you need to wait at least 12 weeks post exposure for a negative to be conclusive. Do you have HSV1?

I should add, she didn't mention taking any suppression meds, and it doesn't hurt when I pee. I have been drinking more water, and have been peeing more, not sure if it's frequent urination as a symptom, or just from the water drinking. Also, my penis doesn't seem painful to touch, even in the areas it is tingling, numb, and burning, which is mainly around the circumference of the head, and at the base of the urethra, on the underside of penis head. My lips are also still tingling / a little numb, but no lesions there either.
