Herpes possibility?

I'm a gay male who in the past month or so has had unprotected oral sex (both giving and receiving) and protected anal sex (me being the top).  On Friday, I started to notice a chancre or some kind of sore on the top of my penis, right by the opening/urethra.  It hasn't really developed into anything bigger yet, and there is no puss coming from it, also it isn't like a blister either.  So not really sure what it is.  I'm worried it could be a sign of herpes, and so wondered what people's thoughts were?  Could it be herpes or perhaps syphilis?

I am thinking of going tomorrow to get it checked out, but any thoughts beforehand would be greatly received.  Thanks.

The pain is just on my penis, no pain in legs.  Before the outbreak, there was pain down the back of both legs.

Sorry for delay in your questions.  The reply back and forth most of thrown the questions out of my view.

1. Is it normal for there to still be pain at the site of the sores 3 1/2 weeks after they appeared?  They have gone, but you can still see faintly where there were and it still hurts there and to urinate sometimes.

You won't have pain from the sores once they heal.  Something else is going on here and it isn't herpes.  You should be seen by a dermatologist and have them do some looking at your skin.

2.  If you have/had sores on the penis only, and that is covered up by a condom, can you still pass on herpes through the other parts of the genital area, meaning if you are naked with someone and wearing a condom, can other skin have the virus?

The virus infects the nerves that supply nerves to the skin in the "boxer short" region.  So it can come anywhere there.

3.  I've read that the virus is transmitted through the mucosal parts, i.e. top of penis, anus, mouth etc.  Can it also go through intact skin, i.e. from leg to leg?

Not if the skin is intact no.  The skin is to thick for it to get through unless an outbreak happens.

You are trying to make this herpes.  Continue to work up with a provider on your issues.  Stop thinking it is herpes until you have the results to prove it.  Symptoms like this can be caused by a number of things.  Just because it is your genital area doesn't mean it is always herpes.
