you didn't contract herpes from sharing a cigarette.
http://www.ashastd.org/std-sti-works/Herpes/oral-herpes.html has terrific info on oral herpes for more reading.
Thanks all just one more question what should I look out for? And when does one show symptoms
If the person has active legions or sores then transmission is possible since Herpes is found to be active in saliva. Avoid sharing cigarettes cups towels and any other utensils or objects with an individual who has an active outbreak. Herpes is somewhat fragile though, upon contact with the air for 30 seconds it usually dies.

What grace is saying is true. I gave my Gf oral herpes when I was 21. :(
I left bad for that.
From what I learned that day is that you have to be exposed to excessive saliva or shedding.
If you are a child (low immunity), you can get herpes from what you describe. That's how I got oral herpes, (as a child from sharing a cup).
as an adult, oral herpes is almost exclusively transmitted through romantic type kisses, not from sharing cigs or drinks.
