herpes symptoms

Hello, a week and a half ago I had protected sex with an old acquainence. About 5 days later, I noticed slight itching around the base of my penis (which was not covered by condom, I'm sure). This slight itching would come and go for three days (I probably recognized it about 4 times total; it was never painful, just slightly irritating. On the third day, I very suddenly became sick. My body ached, I had a headache, I vomited and had persistant diarrhea throughout the night. I went to the doctor the following day and, based on the diarrhea, dry lips and slight pain I felt when he pushed on my stomach, was diagnosed with stomach flu. I drank plenty of sports drink and soup that night as instructed (and took the prescribed IC Promethazine) and woke up this morning feeling fine/normal. My question, then, is could the itching coupled with what as diagnosed as stomach flu really have been atypical symptoms of herpes?  I will admit to being hypersensitive to the issue because I dated a girl who had HSV2; I had a blood test more than a year after the relationship ended and was negative. Thank you.

When I wrote "That just seem conducive to hsv," I meant to say, 'That just DOESN"T seem conducive to hsv." Sorry for any confusion.

Thanks again. No, there have been no other partners since the one I talked about. I've talked to her and explained that she is the only person I've been with since testing negative. She went and got a blood test, actually, so that should clear a lot of things up one way or the other. I explained that I thought I could/might have it, and knew for sure that I was negative before her. Of course, I went out of my way to make sure she knew I wasn't placing blame, as I know if she did have it, she had no idea. She was very cool about it. The results will come next week. The itching, flaking and those tiny scabs still scare me, but the fact that those scabs were gone in literally a day gives me hope. That just seem conducive to hsv. I'm hoping I just did have stomach flu and and some kind of rash/irritated skin and maybe the slight scabs were from me unwittingly scratching down there. Have just read all that, though, it still seems like I'm asking for a lot of coincidences to fall in line.

sounds like something non-herpes going on. if they occur again, be seen for an exam.

have you had new partners since the one you posted about? have they been tested for herpes to know their status too?

Thanks Grace, but the very small legions/minor skin breaks I mentioned do worry me. When I said noticed skin breaks, they were four, very tiny scabs, with the biggest literally being the size of an (ink) pin tip. As you said, I am hyperaware of everything going on at this point, so I know there was nothing there Wednesday (I would look fairly often, because of the slight irritation) and they were there Thursday morning, and there was some slight flaking in that area; there was never fluid, that I saw, and again, I checked often.  After a shower  (which I'm sure lifted the tiny scabs) this a.m., there is no signs of there ever having been anything there. I guess my question is, again coupled with the itching, could herpes legions (i realize they come in all shapes in sizes, if they come at all) come and go that quickly?

Thank you. I just feel like I'm trying to ignore too much. Again, I know you do great work here.

odds are you are just hyperaware of everything going on in your genital area at this point. sounds like you had one of the gi bugs going around, not symptoms of herpes.

well, overnight I had minor skin breaks, nothing they could take a culture from. I'll have to wait a few months and get a blood test. Sigh

No, I didn't mention the itching to the doctor, because there were no sores, blisters -- not even redness. I've also read that while diarrhea can be a symptom, that is not the case for an initial outbreak. Any input is appreciated. Thanks.

Chances are that when dealing with something like this you more then likely where just having a stomach issue.  Herpes itching is typically followed by sores or blisters.  Since you didn't have much of that I doubt it was herpes.  Did you show the itch to your doctor as well?
