painful and frequent urination

I'm a 34 year old female with no history of urinary tract problems. For the last 2 months I have experienced burning, painful and more frequent and urgent urination, sometimes urinating up to 4 times a night. My doctor put me on Cipro last Friday and took a urine specimen. I just called for the results and they said there was no infection present and hung up on me. Should I continue to take the Cipro? And if this isn't an infection, what is it? I'm also experiencing intense and extremely painful swelling in my heel, with reddness and burning to the touch. Is this a gout related issue? I'm not overweight  and do not have a high-fat diet.

HI,  You have symptoms of a UTI with burning, frequency and urgency but the culture came back no infection.  This could be Interstitial Cystitis an inflammation of the bladder call with similar symptoms to a UTI but the cultures are negative for infection.  I would continue the full course of Cipro just to say that you had a trial of antibiotics and the symptoms did not respond.  There are also other types of bacteria you can have that don't show up in a urine culture including chlamidia and mycoplasma.  If you have no response, you need to see a specialist in bladder disorders, either a Urologist who specializes in female urology or a urogynecologist with experience in IC.  You need an evaluation to rule out blood in the urine, endometriosis, a urethral diverticulum and other causes of burning, frequency and urgency. Start the education process by going to the website "ichelp.org" the official website of the Interstitial Cystitis Association and look at the info on getting a correct diagnosis.  Your heal problems are probably unrelated and could be planters fascitis, an inflammation of the tissues in the sole of the foot. See your primary care doctor.  Good Luck
