Liver enzymes high

I was having severe upper stomach and chest pain and went to ER. They did all kinds of tests. Chest xray, Lung scan, gallbladder ultrasound, abdomen scan, upper belly scan, and lots of bloodwork. What they said was I have gallstones. One doctor thought my gall bladder should come out. But other doctor( liver doctor ) thought it shouldnt be removed. What has them concerned more is elevated enzymes levels. When I came in ER they were in the 500s. It went down after a couple of days to 200s but then went back up again. They also did liver biopsy which I am waiting on results of. Go back to liver Dr on Tues to find out out about that. I was also diagnosed with Sarcoidosis in 1998. Have had very few problems with this. Had a blot clot on lung in 2006. Was on Coumadin for abt 6 months. Lung scan this time showed nothing thank goodness. Was wondering if the elevated enzymed could be because of Sarcoidosis? I was also jaundis when I came into ER too.

Hello!

You need to see a specialist. ER doctors are not experts in liver disease (including gallstones). You need to see either a gastroenterologist (digestive disease specialist) or hepatologist (liver specialist) for follow up. They will be able to diagnose the cause of your problems and provide the proper treatment given all of your health issues.

"Patients who have symptoms will need surgery either right away, or after a short period of time.

A technique called laparoscopic cholecystectomy is most commonly used now. This procedure uses smaller surgical cuts, which allow for a faster recovery. Patients are often sent home from the hospital on the same day as surgery, or the next morning.

In the past, open cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal) was the usual procedure for uncomplicated cases. However, this is done less often now.

Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) and a procedure called a sphincterotomy may be done to find or treat gallstones in the common bile duct."

* Elevated AST and ALT are a common result of gallstones.
* Yellowing of skin and whites of the eyes (jaundice) is a common symptom of gallstones.

Let us know what happens.

Cheers!
Hector
