Lung Cancer treatment, which is better, chemo or pain treatment?

My father in law (67) has been diagnosed with lung cancer last week. After his PET scan the doctors say its his last stage. The doctor says radiation is not possible on the cancer and he needs to either undergo chemotherapy or take pain relief drugs. Either ways majority docs here at Bangalore have given up hopes for cure. I need to know which would be best. As few of the docs say itwud be better to be on pain treatment than to bear the chemo effects. I think only patients who have undergon chemo would know how bad are the side effects. He has olredy undergone radiation for his left parotid cancer removal. He had survived that pretty well.

Please post replies for remedies or alternative treatments for the same. We have to give a decision before monday 5th April 2010.

anyways my dad is exactly as ur dads situation,but it happend to him about a year ago....and he is now very very well
his condition was too bad....last stages....and they told him he wont survive more than 3months....he started taking chemotherapt and they wasnt that bad side effects_side effects of disease and pain would be the worst_
the chemotherapy has stopped the regrowth and spread of tumor and hes now chemo_free,survivng very well with no prolems at all,,,,,evem he forgot that he was ill despite what he passed through his treatment
