LUNG CANCER COMMUNITY

confused

My Aunt just got a needle biopsy done yesterday and we are awaiting results. I am trying to prepare myself with info in advance of the results to enable an educated discussion.

I have the results of her initial x-ray and helical CT scan that indicates: a "bulky left upper lobe mass highly suspicious for malignancy"  It appears to be 6.4 cm in length, 6/7 cm in max width, 6 cm in mas anterior-posterior dimension. The remainder of the parenchyma is markedly emphysematious and hyperinflated, lg bullaw are seen in rt and left lobes, no other massed noted, no infiltrates or consolidatios, or pleural effusions are seen.  There is a 2 1/2 cm left hilar lymph node, no mediastinal adenopathy noted."

I'm trying to determine how a mass is determined to be either NSCLC or SCLC.  I cannot find info telling me this anywhere.   SO if that is critical to staging lung cancer how is it determined?  I don't think my aunt will go through another test. She's 77, 95 pounds, and has emphysema. I'm also having a hard time understanding what mediastinal adenopathy is.

mediastinal adenopathy is lymph nodes in the mediastinum

masses in general need to be biopsied to find out what kind of cells are in the mass.  the lung is no exception, but your aunt may not be well enough to have it.

need to ask the doctor...
