Anyone who's had GD...Please help.

Anyone who's had GD...Please help.

Okay, I just got a call from my OB's office and I failed my 1 hr glucose test. So now I'm worried that I may have GD. I am going back for the 3 hr test this Friday and hoping everything comes back normal this time but I would like to get an idea of what having Gestational Diabetes entails. What kind of special precautions or course of action will my dr be taking? What will I have to do to ensure that my baby is okay? I just want to be prepared to do all that I can, no matter what it is, to make sure my baby's kept out of harm's way. Any information on the subject will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Many, many women fail the 1 hour test.  I hate to even call it a failure.  It simply indicates the need for the more diagnostic 3 hour GTT.  Most women who don't pass the 1 hour actually wind up passing the 3 hour test.

If you do wind up having GD, you will be given a sensible eating plan, and instructed how to check your blood sugar often.  If your blood sugars remain out of control, occasionally it is necessary to add another agent like oral pills and sometimes insulin injections.

But most of the time, diet and close monitoring of your blood sugar levels will be all that is needed.

Thank you both so much. The lab technician had actually mentioned that a lot of women had been failing the one hour test for some reason but didn't really elaborate much on it. I guess it's really not that uncommon. Again, thanks for the reassurance. :)

I failed my 3 hour test and had to go on GD diet.  I hated the diet but my baby was not affected by GD.  If you cannot control GD with diet alone you may have to take insulin.

Most people who fail 1 hour actually pass the 3 hour test.  Good luck!

Thank you ladies...I'm hoping everything goes well with the 3 hr test but am prepared to do whatever I have to do to make sure my baby and I are in good health. I'm actually not so stressed over it anymore. :)
