BREASTFEEDING AND ALCOHOL

by BryLo, Mar 31, 2008 09:57AM
Hi all, I will be having my first baby this July.  I was aked this question the other day and thought it doen' hurt get opinions on it.
My girlfriend is getting married in September.  I plan on breastfeeding my baby so i will have to pump for that evening so my mother can watch her.
Is it safe to have a few drinks if I pump enough milk for my baby for while I am away from her and have her back on my breast the following day?

If you mean a "few" like,  3,  that should be fine.  Here's the thing - you won't feel any better than you do after three drinks,  so there's no point in drinking more.  From there you feel worse.

Have fun!

Is your mom keeping her all night? If not, I would not drink, alcohol and a young baby don't mix.

Depends how many.  It takes 2 hours to metabolized 1 serving of alcohol.  You can pump and dump also if you have 1 too many.

you shouldn't drink more/faster than your body can metabolize.  At the hospital they told me one drink an hour with a one hour break before feeding.

Thanks Ladies....I'll probably only have one glass of champian to celebrate with my girlfriend...
Its best to just stay clear.

Contrary to popular belief, pumping and dumping doesn't do much, it has to clear your system and only time does that. Good rule is if you still feel it, it is will come through your milk.

my doctor told me on my last pregnancy that if you drink (i was gonna drink wine), that you need to wait 1 and a half day before breast feeding again. let me tell you one thing that WILL HELP. i got sick and had to take nyquil while breastfeeding. so i stopped breastfeeding but i had to keep pumping so i wont lose milk. and my milk was green the color of the nyquil for two days after drinking it for that one day. so i hope that tells you. that anything you drink will be in your milk for at least a couple of days.
