Beta levels following loss of 1 twin

by lirparn, Jun 02, 2004 12:00AM
i had ivf last month.....my first beta on 5/21/04 was 120. The doc told me to come into the office in 2 weeks for a sono which is scheduled for 6/7. This past sunday i started to bleed very heavy and passed some clots (no cramping)...i went to the er and my cervix was closed....the bleeding stopped a few hours later and ive had none since...the next day i went to my docs office and had a beta of 2178, they did a sono and saw a 1 sac with a yolk sac still intact but said it was too early for a heartbeat (5weeks 6 days)...today (48 hours later) my beta was 1757....the doc said the level dropped "a little" and to repeat it in 48 hours....could the beta level drop after losing a twin and then regain its momento and start rising again if the other twin survives? Should my drop in HCG indicate iminent miscarriage? Help!!!

Hi.  I am about 5 weeks pregnant with twins.  I have also had the same bleeding and passing of clots, however, it happened twice.  My HCG level was 37,700 last Thursday.  That was my first blood test because I did not know that I was pregnant.  I immediatley went in for an ultrasound and it showed two sacs but no yolks.  The doctor thought that it was too early to see the sacs.  I am scheduled for another ultrasound with a specialist this Friday.  On Saturday my HCG level was 37,300 and on Monday was 51,000.  My doctor thinks that it is good that it went up, but some problems may exist.  I was bleeding (not heavy) since 5/4.  I bled heavy twice.  Sound like the same thing your experiencing.  How was your ultrasound today?

hi wendy, thanks for your reply!! I did not have an ultrasound today...they saw a good sac and yolk already a few days ago and want to wait till monday (6/7) for the next sono when they expect to have a heartbeat....i am so glad to hear that betas can rise after they fell (and you fell 400 just like i did!) Do you think you lost a twin? Do you think theres any signifigance to seeing no yolks yet? i only bled that once and nothing since or before that, but im worried the last twin wont sustain....let me know how your ultrasound goes on friday...im only doing bloods on fri to check my beta lavels....good luck!!

Hi.  Well I have bad news.  When I got my ultrasound done yesterday, it showed nothing.  Apparently I had a miscarriage.  I wasn't aware of it because I had no cramping or pain, just a little bleeding.  I hope that your outcome is better.  I am going back on Wednesday for another ultrasound to check again, and if there is nothing there I am getting a D&C.  I hope that you have better results.  Good Luck, let me know!

I had IVF using Donor eggs, using Frozen Embryos 6 weeks ago. At 5 weeks my HGC levels where 811. I had 3 embryos transfered. I had a scan at 5 weeks no embryos,  could be detected . I ewas told that it was too early to see anthing but I had a small bleed.I had a blood test ont he date of my scan my HGC level dropped to 361. 6 days later it had doped to 232. I carried on with Progesterone and patches. I went for another blood test 1 week later and my HGC level had started to rise again. I have had a small amount blood lose. Dark brown in colour. Could I still be pregnant? Why would my HGC levels start rising?

they had started ti rise again,
