Brown Spotting-please give me some reassurance

by Magabell, Sep 25, 2004 12:00AM
I woke up this morning with some brown spotting.  I am 7 weeks pregnant.  I am so worried.  Can anyone help me?  I called the dr. and I am going up to have blood drawn this afternoon.  I know that will not tell me much though.  I had a m/c in Feb and it started the same way.  I am a nervous wreck here.  Has anyone had brown spotting and still carried out a healthy pregnancy??  If so, what was the cause of the spotting???

Try to relax a bit.  Brown spotting is simply old blood.  Bleeding or spotting early in pregnancy is very, very common.  Most times there is no definate reason ever discovered, and most pregnancies go on uneventfully afterwards.  Occasionally, as you are unfortunately aware--a m/c can begin this way, but don't assume the worst.

Your doctor is doing the right thing in checking the levels, but you will need them checked a few times to be sure they are rising.

Good luck.

Hi there,

I fell pregnant in February just like you and at 6wks i woke up with brown spotting, everyone said 'oh don't worry as long as you are not bleeding that is just old blood'. So i felt a little bit better but when i went for my scan it was a blighted ovum and ended in a d&c.

I have a friend at work who also found she had a little brown spotting and was worried as she knew what had happened to me, but she is now 5 months preggy with a boy and doing fine.

So you see brown spotting does not always end in bad news, wait and see what the doc. says first and try to relax.

I am now 5 wks preggy and any cramps i feel always have me worrying something is wrong, i am trying to take things easy as i believe if this pregnancy is meant to be it will and no amount of worrying will help.

Hope everything goes well, and keep us posted.

You said you worry anytime you feel cramps. With my first pg (ended in m/c) and with the one I have now (4 weeks, 4 days), I have mild cramping. To me, it's normal and as long as I feel the cramps, I feel like everything is working. My sister had cramps through her whole pregnancy and had a healthy baby girl. Just wanted you to know that cramps don't always mean something is wrong.

A friend of mine had brown bleeding around 9 weeks and clots coming out.  She ended up having her baby just fine.  She had her hormonal levels checked and a u/s.  Everything showed up fine.  I wish you the best and I hope that it goes good for you.

All three of my miscarriages started the same way with the brownish colored blood. Then the cramps started and the red blood came..I know what you are feeling especially since experiencing one already. They will be able to tell by your HCG levels what's going on you will probably have to have blood drawn again within 48 hours they are going to compare the two numbers to see if they are rising and doubling...If they are then you will be fine if they are dropping or barely going up it's probably not a good sign. On my fourth pregnancy I had a successful one and had no brownish spotting at all. But I am 24 weeks pregnant with our second child now and at 4weeks I had a little brownish color mucus when I would wipe and I like you thought oh no here we go again...well I had no cramps and just a little when I would use the restroom and wipe. The doctor told me not to worry this time that it was implantation bleeding which I didn't have with my daughter but I guess he was right because I am now 6 months and everything is going great! If you have any questions or need to talk feel free....I know what you are going through...I wish you the best...

I am 9 weeks pregnant and am having dark brown spotting usually at night. I had an ultra sound 2 days ago and they could hear my baby's heartbeat also the doctor did not see any problems with my ovaries. I have been having cramps in my ovary area for 3 weeks now. I decided to bed rest today and the cramps stopped but the dark brown spotting is still continuing. I am so scared. I really don't want my baby to die. Can anyone help me?

I had the same thing for 5 or 6 weeks.  It can be perfectly normal.  my son is now 16 days old and perfectly normal.  When mine got dark brown it was close to stopping.  hopefully it wont last too much longer for you.
