Early weight gain...what do you think?

by 2ndBaby, Feb 27, 2007 12:00AM
Hello-I am 8.5 weeks pregnant and have already gained about 6 pounds.  I think it is a combination of the fact that I am ALWAYS hungry and that I am way too tired to do additional exercise at the end of a long work day and evening doing chores, childcare, etc.  (FYI-early am exercise doesn't work for me-I already drag myself out of bed at 5 a.m. just to get to work on time).  I HATE veggies and love sweets, besides!

I lost my baby weight last time using Weight Watchers points system.  Because I am familiar with that (know portion sizes, how to count my points, etc), I am thinking of using it to control my eating now.  I know I can't use the normal points range-I'm not trying to lose weight, just stop the excessive gain.

If you are familiar with the program, how much do you think I should increase my point intake?  Not as much as a nursing mom, right?

Thanks for your help.  I swear my metabolism stopped when I hit 30.  Now that I'm well over that point, I don't want to end up with a huge problem after baby's arrival!  I KNOW my first job and concern is to grow a healthy child.  Any advice for me?

I am totally in your boat! I have been pregnant for over a year straight, well if you don't count the 6 weeks between loosing my baby at 20 weeks and getting pregnant 6 weeks later... I started out Last January 06 weighing 156lbs... When i lost the baby in May I weighed 180lbs I lost 15 lbs just like that, then 6 weeks later i was pregnant again, this time high risk and unable to do much excercising or anything for that matter, now at 38 weeks I weigh 230lbs... I'm so worried about this weight, my doc has never made one thing out of it or said anything about it, only that I didn't look like I weighed taht much, I'm 5'8 and muscular frame (well used to be lol) So I am joining weight watchers as well, Just wanted to say your not alone, God bless and Good luck

your not supposed to do weight watchers while pregnant, wait until after the baby is born and follow the points system for nursing mothers.

I'm not trying to be rude BUT I DON"T plan on doing weight watchers until after I have my baby... I'm 38 weeks and will go AFTER i have the baby, I do have common sense that you are nopt supposed to diet while pregnant, don't you think I would have done it before I got to 230lbs, If you noticed in her post she said she lost her baby weight at weight watchers, I said I was gonna do the same... No where did i say that i was doing while I was pregnant! I'm sorry to go off but i'm really tired of people jumping the gun and insulting peoples inteligents on here when they decide to give there own 2 cents

easy there ladies I see those pregnancy hormones shinning through =0).  I'm in the same boat as you all, I'm 7 weeks pregnant and I'm scared to death to step on the scale.  I think a lot of my weight gain is from quiting smoking, but it's still driving me crazy.  I heard you loose a lot of weight breast feeding - there may be alot of feedings taking place ha ha. Smile ladies we are all fat, but there is a beautiful child growing inside of us, oh yeah the extra cup size on our breast seems to make a difference.

LOL, you are right these hormones hehe BUT i do get tired of people putting there own 2 cents in when it isn't needed, it's really gotten out of control on here, and it ruins the site for people, my point was that neither one of us mentioned going on a diet nor was the question about going on a diet, the person who answered didn't even address the posters question, just felt the need to comment on my answer in which she didn't even fully read.. lol... Anyway I can imagine how hard it was to quit smoking for you, you should be very proud of yourself, many moms can't seem to kick the habit, congrats to you for being able to stop AND congrats on the baby.... God bless

Thank you thendricks!  To clarify, I AM NOT trying to 'Go on Weight Watchers' right now.  Perhaps I was unclear on that.  I am simply thinking of using the plan to guide my eating choices.  Again, NOT TO LOSE WEIGHT, but to stop EXCESSIVE, and therefore unnecessary, weight gain.  It is an easy way for me to count calories since I am very familiar with the plan.

If anyone has any thoughts about using the plan to guide my eating choices now (ie: points necessary to keep baby and me healthy) I would love to hear them.

Good luck, everyone :)

I talked to weight watchers and while they do not recommend it to pregnant women, they do have pregnant women who use the program while pregnant, when it was ok'd by their OB/GYN

i imagine the weight will come off fast. my partner gained something like 30lbs while pregnant and it was all gone by the 6wk checkup, and she did NO exercise or anything. just sort of melted away :p see how you feel after the birth and how fast it comes off, etc. what i'm worried about is the muscle mass i've lost during this pregnancy...

i think using weight watchers and adding a reasonable number of points makes perfect sense

ask your doctor to make sure it is OK

sooooo many of us need "gudelines"  or we have no control - WW will give you those guidelines and as long as you add in the correct number of points you shoule be fine

I am in your same situation.  I am only 15 weeks and have already gained over 10lbs.  (I don't know exact numbers because I don't want to weigh myself...just when I go to the dr)  I have been so sick, but have not been throwing up very much (taking unisom/b6).  I feel like I have to eat all the time to keep my stomach from being empty...and the healthy stuff doesn't sound good.  I was thinking of doing the same thing...following weight watchers, but adding extra points so not to lose weight but to control the gain.  I know we don't need as many points as nursing moms...so maybe somewhere in the middle??  I am also considering the South Beach Diet phase 2 during pregnancy.  I read that was ok to do while pregnant...not phase 1!  I just have to wait till I feel better and can make healthier choices and hopefully start walking everyday too.  That should help. :o)

I'm not familiar with the WW program, wish I had been but I moderated my food myself and maybe not so well.  I started this pregnancy at 210lbs (according to my first visit with my high risk OBGYN which wasn't till I was about 9 weeks).

I'm 14 weeks now, and had my surgery 10 days ago to remove an ovarian tumor, but I'm 204lbs now.  I'm pretty happy about this, kinda wondering what I would've started with had I not had a tumor the size of a honeydue melon, so I don't know how much weight is good to gain now.  Should I be starting with the after surgery weight?  Or assume I was under 200lbs before the pregnancy?

Oh, that is nothing 6pounds only 8w.  I gained 13 in the first 12w - count your blessings girl because it could be a lot worse.  I'm now 23w1d and have gained 30pounds!!!  I gained 8pounds in four weeks the last time I stepped on the scale.  I don't check my weight anymore.  I just go to the dr and then that is where I find out.  Remember I wasn't sick at all so everything I ate stayed with me :-)  I started off at 137 and I am 5'5.

You all are feaking me out.  I have lost 40 lbs in the last year then bamm I'm prego.  Trust me I'm extreamly happy, but the weight keeps adding up.  This is my 3rd child and my youngest one is 9 so I'm sure I'll gain more weight then a person on their first child.  Plus the quitting smoking which was really easy for me because the pregnancy.  I wish there was some kind of diet for us, where we would only gain weight from the baby and not weight in our butt.
