Ectopic, threatened miscarriage...any hope?

I'm wondering if anyone has any insight -
First + preg test on 5/30. Went to ER on 6/4 with moderate bleeding, abd and back pain. HCG=only 23. Bleeding only lightly next day and gone by 3rd day. 2 days later HCG=45.  One day later=69. On 6/11 and 6/12 light spotting brown blood w/ abd and back pain. On 6/12, HCG=231 Progesterone low = 6.

First question - how was it possible for me to have + PT on 5/30 when HCG levels were only 23 6 days later?  Is it possible for HCG to go down and then up again?

Cervix has not dialated so no miscarriage yet. I am waiting for levels to go up enough for them to see something on ultrasound.  It's driving me crazy waiting because I don't want a tube to burst in the meantime if it is ectopic (though I have none of the risk factors for that and had just had my tubes checked the same month I got pregnant and they were normal).  It obviously doesn't look good, and maybe I have no reason to hope - but I can't help hoping a little.

Any words of wisdom?

Hi everyone.these forums are new to me this is a first for me anyway here goes...
We had ivf second lot one child from first.I had 2 embryos put in with a frozen embryo transfer.I bled on day 8 and also through to day 11- present 1 week today.mild period pain cramping one day after transfer.Pregnancy test on day 14, faint positive but noticeable.hcg done day after came back as 69 was told its fine..I knew it was low and I asked for progesterone that was 17.second hcg 2 days later 18 was told I'm having a miscarriage.I tried to say could I be losing a vanishing twin was told no.they Wont take any more hcg tests,no u/s nothing.I have a belly that's expanding at 4 weeks.now would be 4 weeks 4 days.not sure what to do.I'm on ivf climaval and progesterone and was told to stop treatment yesterday when told I was miscarrying.I'm thinking I have lost a twin and one is still inside so have kept going with the climaval and progesterone just in case .has anyone else had this? Would love there still to be a baby in there.

Ive had my tubes tied for almost 5 yrs now. Recently just found out im pregnant. Went to the doctor and after an internal sonogram and external they couldnt see anything. Its way to early doc said and my hcg levels are low. I was on my period at this time. Only difference was it was prolonged. (11 days rather then my usual 6 days). So as im waiting to go back for more blood work and testing i cant help but to think am i miscarrying or is it a ectopic pregnancy. Bleeding has stopped and have no pains at all.

I posted under a different topic that my levels have since been going down and yesterday doc confirmed miscarriage, as lower HCG and progesterone and nothing on u/s.  This is my first and it has been very helpful to have this forum to discuss with others who are going through similar experiences, as it has been very difficult for me. I hope your situation turns out better and hope the best for all of us who are having these problems.  May we all have healthy babies :)

I am in a very similar situation as you.  Positive HPT on 6/8.  HCG level on 6/9- 27.  On 6/11 started spotting and HCG levels checked again & only 30.  HCG on 6/13 only went up to 42.  Cervix is closed.  I go back to have HCG checked again on 6/16.  My doctor told me he doesn't think it will be a normal pregnancy but he didn't elaborate.

Hi all - I just wanted to thank you for your replies.  I've thought of the possibility of having miscarried one twin as an explanation for my strange HCG situation, but didn't know if that was me just hoping that there might still be a healthy baby in there.  I go in today to check my HCG and progesterone again and am keeping my fingers crossed :)

It is possible for you to get a + hpt, and then have levels too low a few days later if you had a vanishing twin. Keep your fingers crossed, but there may still be a baby in there. For many people ectopic pg causes severe abdominal pain. If this has not happened to you, your chances are somewhat lower. Anyway, I just wanted to say, don't give up hope yet.

Yes, misdiagnosedmiscarriage is a great site- I want to say that first. Secondly, your hcg and progesterone indicate something abnormal, but it sounds too soon to say what. When I had an ectopic, my levels rose very high, with no abdominal pain and no risk factors. I did have some very early light bleeding (before I knew I was pg), and once I did know, my progesterone was very low- less than 4. I will keep my fingers crossed that your u/s gives you some good news.

In the case of a vanishing twin this could happen I suppose. Hope this helps.
