Help Daughter born w/ Congenital Nevus on face

My daughter is now 6 months old, she was born with a congentital nevus on her nose close to her eye. Its approx 3/4" in length and is raised up. She also has some smaller ones on the end of her nose.  We consulted a dermatologist, who said we will watch it closely and doesn't think it is a mole but rather a birthmark more so as it is Epidermal. he said we may want to have it removed for cosmetic reasons and at this time he doesn't know whether it could potentially be cancerous. He then referred me to a "cosmetic" dermatologist that uses laser removal. That derm doesn't work on children, EVER. But his receptionist did tell me he has 2 kids of his own though so he is good with children!! I certainly was NOT comforted by that as having kids doesn't mean you know how to do surgery on them! Well after hours and hours of research I think I should see a plastic surgeon for this. Now my dilemma has been no PS in the area works on children. I'm waiting for a call back from one that works at the local children's hospital to see what his nurse says about a consult. Has anyone's children had this and have had it removed? If so at what age is best? Thank you!!

Sorry, I have not had personal experience with this, but my daughter did see a pediatric plastic surgeon for some stitches on her chin and I recommended him to a friend whose daughter also had a nevus on her face.  I would definitely try to get a consult with the ped. plastic surgeon at the hospital and see about referrals to one in private practice or for direction on how you should proceed.

Since it is in such a prominent place on her face, you really do want someone who has experience...especially since she's so small.

Find out when they would intervene...would it be safe to wait until she's older or is it imperative to do it sooner?  Can they just biopsy a small section and if not cancerous wait and monitor?

Obviously if it were cancerous action would need to be immediate.

Did they give you the liklihood of this?

You need to make up a list of questions to go over with this ped. plastic surgeon...

Have you tried to contact your insurance company for a referral to a pediatric plastic surgeon?  If there are some, but not part of your network, then you should ask to go there and have them pay as they would if they were part of your network (not really the issue, but just saying)...but they might be a good resource to find a pediatric specialist.

Good luck!  Let us know how you make out.

My daughter was also born with congenital nevi near her face and nose, but luckily its not raised, but it is very prominent and dark brown, I have gone to numerous pediatric Surgeons (Dr. Hollier at texas CHildren  Hospital,a nd pediatric Dermatologist Dr. Taresa Wright at Texas Children Hospital, and I have also seen Plastic/Cosmetic Surgeon Dr. Eisemen) but at the end I came to a conclusion of not having a surgery done because it will leave significant scaring on her face, me and my husband will proceed with Laser Procedure thats the safest of all so far. I am going next week to consult with her pediatric Surgeon to do biopsy so we can be sure to proceed with Laser Procedure.  if you have more questions feel free to email me at aayesha_18***@****

good luck
