Seriously, I'm 20 weeks pregnant and I can't feel a thing. They say the baby sleeps for 12 to 14 hours of the day, so my baby might be moving at night when I'm asleep, but I haven't felt anything. My u/s technician said I probably wouldn't feel anything until about 22 weeks, so hopefully I'll feel something soon.
I agree with comment on the gas bubbles. People would often ask me if I felt anything and I told them it felt like gas bubbles so I really couldn't tell which was which! I also felt this in my lower abdomen.
This is my 5th pregnancy, 3 alive and 1 miscarriage, and I will really like to know if someone can feel gas bubbles in their lower abdomen (pelvic area), I agree that one can feel gas bubbles, but it would either be in your upper left abdomen or upper right abdomen, because that's where your stomach is at, but I do not know for the lower abdomen, right now I am feeling quickening, it's like a little fluttering, not bay kicking movements, in my pelvic area, and do not doubt what nature can do, we are not God and no one knows what God can do, his thoughts and his ways are higher than ours, God bless you.
I'm 23 weeks and I just stated feeling little twitches here and there last week. It happens every once and awhile and some days the baby is more active then others. I get nervous when I don't feel it everyday. I mostly feel it before I go to bed.
Yes, I sometimes feel gas bubbles in my abdomen. Sometimes if I did not know better I'd say I was pg because for me it can feel exactly how Tyler felt at 22 weeks.
Yes, in the very beginning I only felt him about 1-3 times a day. It was not consistent at all. It started to pick up pace and by 26 weeks you could see his kicks on the outside of my stomach. It won't be long for you now! :-)
I guess stranger things have happend but seeing as how right now your baby is the size of a half a grain of rice, I would seriously dought it.
Yes, you can certainly feel gas bubbles in your lower intestines near your colon.
in my 3rd pregnancy I had all kinds of weird feelings very early, not sure if it had something to do with the fact that I was 100 lbs overweight for the first two?? I knew I was pregnant before the test came back because my lower abdomen just felt different. I also felt all kinds of twitches and whatnot from about 12 weeks on. I think every woman is different, and it just depends on how sensitive you are to changes in your own body. My gyno told me she didn't feel her baby kick until 25 weeks! could you imagine???
Trust me, with the training I have received, I am well aware of the human body and where things are placed. Don't ask advice from people if you're going to have an attitude about the answers you receive.
By the way, sensations radiate from one area of the body to the other all the time. If you don't beleive anyone here, ask a doctor, I am absolutely positive that your O.B. will tell you the same thing, that at five weeks pregnant, it is extremely unlikely to feel the baby's movements at all, quickening or not.
Good luck to you and sorry to hear about your previous miscarriage.
I do not have any attitude, God has made the difference in my life and I am very humble, but to let you know a little about me, I am a student nurse, and will be graduating in june, and believe me I know what I am saying, I wish you all the best and please do not make this thread into an argument, everyone is entitle to their own opinion, respect mines, because I totally respect yours, God Bless you and let us be humble.
Don't snap at me but I was experiencing some unusual sensations in my lower abdomen that I thought for sure was a female problem and both an ob/gyn and gastro doctor told me my pains were "gas" related and not female. Unless you have MD after your name I beleive in my doctors and at 5weeks you are having gas pains.
No, the baby does not move at five weeks, infact, the arm buds and legs have probably not even begun to form yet, that will take place within the next couple of weeks.
This is my second pregnancy so I am aware of fetal movement and how it feels, I can honestly say that even when I am not pregnant, I have fluttering sensations in my lower abdomen.
But no Adevotee, the baby isn't moving yet, it is still, semi, in the form of a mass of cells at 5 weeks. Good question!
More times than not, you are actually just experiencing the sensation that comes along with gas bubbles. People get them all the time and yes, when fetal movement begins (much later in pregnancy) it can closely resemble the same sensation until it turns into full blown kicking and moving.
You can and will, as all human beings, feel gas bubbles in your lower abdomen, and again I am making reference to the lower abdomen, not the bladder or reproductive organs.
I get them often, pregnant or not as most men and women do.
Just for everyones information... You Can feel gas bubbles, digestion all throughout your large/small intestine. I PROMISE YOU!!! I was feeling these sensations during my 10th week and swore i didnt miscarry because i felt flutters. Well my baby was gone.. so .. i wasnt feeling the baby. ALSO even when i wasnt PG i feel "flutters" in my tummy. I am very aware of my stomach because i am lactose intolerant and i have IBS w/Spastic colon. Your colon is AKA as your LARGE INTESTINE which runs from the center of your stomace, up your right side, across your tummy (under belly button) down your left side, across your pelvis and meets up with your rectum. Your small intestines are what absorb aall the nutrients and they are jumbled in between your large intestines "border" when they absorb nutrients, they also create gas pockets. I dont think a 5 week old baby CAN move. BUT i am not an expert on that so i dont know. ANyway.. i hope this helps.. and CONGRATS on your BFP MOM OF 3.. and i am sorry for your loss..

i was about 21 or 22 weeks (lol good thing i wrote it down at home,me and my preggo brain lol) this is my first child and i thought something was wrong cause i had a 3d ultrasound at 19 1/2 weeks and could see her turning and kicking and grooving but couldnt feel anyhing, then i had my anatamy screening at 20 weeks and again i could see her move but couldnt feel her... about a week later i was sitting on the couch watching star wars and i finally felt her,but i wasnt sure if it was her cause i didnt feel it again for about a week but then it started getting more and more frequent and now (32 1/2 weeks) she is the energizer bunnie-she keeps going and going and going lol
The only thing I can say is that when I went to the doctor at 5 weeks pregnant all I saw was a sac! The doctor said that eventually everything would start growing inside. I have had gas travel from my back to my chest and all through my abdomen. I've had it so bad in my back that I couldn't raise my arms. I have felt it high low and everything in between. Before I got pregnant I always thought I was because of the gas bubbles moving about. Gas is an amazing thing.
i know exactly what you mean.. Sometimes when i am having a terrible intestine day (my many problems) I feel the pains in my lower left ribs. It is weird... My Poor Poor Poor dh. :-)
i first felt my baby move around 14 weeks. but not very often. by 18 weeks, he was going nuts. during the u/s at 18.5 weeks the tech was like "he won't stop moving" and i was like "i know, i've been feeling him all day!" it's a wonderful feeling. if i was having a bad day, that made me feel a whole lot better.
I just want to let you know that I am 99.9% sure that it is physically impossible to feel quickening at 5 weeks because the fetus has not even developed enough to move. I watched the show From Conception to Birth and it explained how a baby (fetus) cannot physically move itself until 7 weeks at the earliest. It hasn't even developed limb buds yet.
I think I was about 4 months pregnant when I finally felt my baby. She had the hicups! It was so cute and remained consistant (weekly hicups) throughout pregnancy and went on till she was about 8 or 9 months old.
You know, I have gas issues all the time and it seems that being pregnant has made it worse. Instead of morning sickness I had extremely painful bloating and gas for 3 months. Even now I can tell when I the gas has built up because I get this terrible pressure in my pelvic area similar to menstrual cramps! My husband and son have made fun of me so bad that I left the room near tears. Glad to find someone who shares my "gastro woas".
I don't think it's possible for anyone to verify that what you feel in the early weeks is quickening, thats why no one beleives it. But I do know that the baby moves that young. Not intentional movements. They just have little reflex twitches as there little parts are coming together. Maybe if the baby had a real big one you could feel it, but no one would beleive you. But if I can feel my tiny egg >pop< out of my ovary, why wouldn't we be able to feel the occational big tiny >jump<. I'm 8 weeks now and have felt a twitch now and again where I feel like the baby is and though I know it's unheard of I like to wonder if that was a little life happening in their. It really doesn't matter if anyone beleives you, if you felt something and you dont fart in the minutes following, you can wonder and smile happily to yourself.
funny someone should bring this topic up. its been on my mind too. im on my 3rd pregnancy, 16 weeks out and i haven't felt any quickening. im nervous that some have felt at 14, and even earlier. i have had an us, and the baby was moving, (2weeks ago) so im not totally in the freak zone yet. LOL. i just wish it would start for me too. i dont have a clear recollection of when it started in my first 2. not too early though.
thanks for the advice. ;) baby dust and quickening dust to all.
At 18 weeks I started feeling little nudges every now and again. I found that if I pressed in my belly a little (the same way the doctor did when she was doing the ultrasound) I could get it to move. Well yesterday at work I sat with my hand on my belly and it did the biggest flip ever. Boy did it hurt! It was great, neat and exciting all at once but it still hurt! Everyone at work was excited and said "Oh yippee it's starting". I haven't felt much since. I guess it just depends on the personality of the baby. It seemes it only makes any strong movements when it's mad at where my hand is! Otherwise it's content as can be.
I am thirteen weeks with my third pregnancy, and I have been feeling movement for a week or two. With my first pregnancy I felt movement at about four months,my second was about 3 months. The sensations I feel are much different than gas, I have experience feeling fetal movement, and gas....lol. To me, I can really tell the difference! It doesn't feel like gas to me at all. I think once you know what it feels like, you can possibly identify it sooner. That is why women usually feel it sooner with subsequent pregnancies.
with my first pregnancy it was about 4 months before i felt anything.this time im only about 3 months and felt a little a couple of days ago, i have gotton gas bubbes before and still do but it feels slightly different.. and is around the same time of day for me.
my baby at 6 weeks had arms and legs and was moving all about, the radiologist told me I was 6 weeks and told me my due date so it is possible for the baby to move now I didn't feel the baby until 16weeks but I did see the baby very busy and I still have my ultrasound pics to show the arms and the legs not buds so if that lady says she can feel it let her have that.
I am 8 weeks prego and at night while laying in the bed I feel bubbles. This is my 2nd pregnancy and it feels just like it did when my 1st was moving. I was just wondering if maybe I am feeling the baby or if it is just gas.
i was about 14 weeks and it was this little bubbling sensation.. i had never felt anything like it so i knew it had to be the baby...my Ob confirmed that it was indeed probably that and fetal movements about 19 weeks or so but it didnt become more apparent until i was liek 23-25 weeks when i realized thats what it was lol
Yeah, some of you people really need to get an education because if you think you can feel fetal movements at 5 weeks you're nuts!! It is virtually impossible!!
Also, it is entirely possible to feel "gas bubbles" through out your whole abdomen. After all, you do have several feet of intestine and gas radiates through your entire digestive system not just your stomach.
My goodness people! This is why you should never seek advice from the internet because of uneducated lame brains like yourselves!!
WOW! I CANT EVEN STOP LAUGHING RIGHT NOW! OK FIRST OFF IF YOU HATE THE NET SO MUCH THEN UMMMMM GET OFF! 2ND WHAT ARE YOU DOING ON THIS SITE IF YOU ARENT CURIOUS? NOT EVERYONE HAS BEEN TO MED SCHOOL SWEETS SO DONT CALL PEOPLE UNEDUCATED LAME BRAINS FOR ASKING QUESTIONS.YOU'RE FREAKING RUDE!
I read somewhere on the net dont remember the website but it said. That when you get pregnant, you do start to feel little flutering in your tummy. that is to make it strong enough for your baby to be held for 9 months. It just said its to make stronger. I dont know.
I know that when i was pregnant with my daughter, which was my first pregnancy, i didn't feel her kick until i was about 20+ weeks. I just started feeling my baby move with my second pregnany, and i'm 13 weeks, although my doctor said that i'm measuring about 14+ weeks. If you look up on the internet what a baby looks like at 5 weeks, you'll see that it's just a ball of cells, and since they count your pregnancy from your last menstral peroid, you're baby is actually only 1 week old. So it's likely you just felt implantation, or gas, and just wishing/hoping that it was the baby, unfortunatley, that's not likely, actually it's impossible, although, it would be nice, as all us mothers know. But anyway, good luck with everything everyone, have a healthy and happy pregnancy
Yep Im totally going to resurrect this old thread! it had me so happy.. he he.
I am 8 weeks pregnant and have definite flutters. little fish like sensations daily. and Yep they are GAS! I felt my son move at 13 weeks so it wouldnt be to illogical to think that this one will start earlier .. say 12 weeks.. lol. but im also no insanely fooling myself into thinking it is actually the fetus im feeling.
okay that being said
few comments:
Yes at the early stages of pregnancy the fetus even though roughly the size of a kidney bean, does move around, however it is moving in a space as large as a giant grapefruit. so not much chance you will feel it.
I dont know why the person thought it was funny that someone felt their ovulation but boy did I ever.. actually it has a scientific name. its called middleschmurtz. ( may be off on the spelling) and women very much have a sort of cramp when they ovulate. so her theory of possibly feeling the baby isnt too far off. I dont think its the baby doing laps that one would feel. but perhaps a small cramp on the side the baby decided to implant on and as the fetus grows a little cramp on that side is not unfathomable. Flutter.. eh not so much.
now if your are in your 12 week and feel the same flutters it would be difficult for anyone to say weather that was gas or fetal movement. but I think 12 weeks for flutters is the lowest it gets. beyond that (less weeks) I would chock it up to gas, take a colace and get over it.
If u are a student nurse and u say u know it is why come on ere and ask for advice? Your baby wont be movin at 5 weeks pregnant its just like havin a ant in ya womb would u be able feel that moving? No u wouldnt. I think u should just ask ur doctor and they will tell u ull not be able feel the baby moving that early.
God who the hell is trainin u in nursin they obviously thick.
I disagree with all that are talking about Mom...I felt my son move with my first pregnancy at 11-13 weeks. It felt like tightening, and then flutters. I did a search for quickening at 5 weeks, because I am feeling the exact same thing on my lower left side, in the front, where I've been feeling things all week. THis is my second child. It is not painful, or annoying, but you can feel it. I don't think people know what to look for, and that is why everyone thinks it is gas or something different. As time goes on, children change, and there is a sort of evolution. Children are born smarter, and doing things quicker. Why can't we feel quickening at 5 weeks? Because you dont? Please...everyone is belittling someone for asking a question to find out if someone shares her feelings. Maybe some are too hormonal to understand what a great time this is...maybe some choose to be bitter.
this is out of control. why doesn't everyone ask their OB during their next appt. i have mine sept 22 and will ask. at 5 weeks pregnant, my fetal pole had not even developed. at 6 weeks it did and it was firmly implanted on the wall, not able to move. not until 8 weeks did i have a small little 5cm bean with little arm buds and little leg buds. i am almost 16 weeks and just started feeling small strange feelings that could be movement.
Great idea- ask your OB and I know my OB told me that it is a mass of cells up until 6 weeks and between 6 and 7 weeks the heartbeat starts with no arms and legs yet, just buds. I asked my OB at my about 14 week doc. appt. when to expect to feel the baby (this is #3 but I just forget) and he said between 20 and 24 weeks although since it's not my first pregnancy and I am thin, I may feel it sooner but no earlier than 14 weeks. I felt him move at about 16-17 weeks and they were just the quickening. I have an ultrasound of my baby at 6 weeks and believe me, there is nothing there to feel move. It's a tiny mass of cells the size of a grain of rice or less as described by my perinatologist. I have no idea how you would feel a grain of rice inside you. I inow I too was WISHING to feel the baby move but gas bubbles, digestion, etc. can all be fakers. I looked back in my books and felt my daughter for the first time at 22 weeks and my son at 19 weeks and then this one between 16-17 weeks. For the sake of arguing, let someone think they felt what they want but medically, it's NOT possible.
Everyone is saying something is not possible, but you are WRONG! I had an ultrasound at 6 weeks with my son (4 years ago), and he had fingers, and feet a head, and body that were very visible! Some people are more in tune with their bodies than others. Not that she and I think that the child is in there kicking away, but there is movement. A flutter feels different than gas, or anything else. I know when I have gas, I can feel a lump move thru my stomach. On another website someone sent this link...it shows the development week by week. You will see that a beating heart and liver are present. What ball of cells, your child has elbows in two weeks, etc. And by the way...it moves spontaneously! There is your medical opinion! So please...stop telling someone that they can't be feeling what they think they are feeling.
The below is a week by week slide show with information on what happens each week. The ball of cells everyone is talking about happens before you even miss your period.
I am pregnany with my 2nd child I first felt movement at 20weeks with the 2st pregnancy. This time I felt quickening at 15 1/2 wks for 2 days straight I am now 17 weeks it has been over a week and I have not felt any quickening since. I don't go back to the dr until next week at 18 1/2 weeks. Should I be concerned.

Hi all - this will be my first child and I started to feel light movements about 2 weeks ago at around 13 weeks. It was a very strange feeling, and I was nervous to share this with people as I expected to be told "its way too early, that's not what you're feeling" - intuitively I knew it was the baby moving, and decided to quietly monitor the movements for myself. After a few days of sporadic movements I slowly began to notice a pattern in the movements and time of day, and now they are getting stronger and more frequent - last night was the strongest to date and it was amazing (though a little freaky) - and perhaps if I hadn't tuned into the feeling already last night would have been the first time I "realised" I felt it move!! :) I love the feeling, and find it very reassuring, and it is not gas.
The point is that, whilst it is not considered "normal" for a first time mum to feel these movements so early - every woman is different, and every pregnancy is different too. We all know; opinions are like a**holes - everyone's got one, but, what we probably don't realise is that by being overly critical, and expecting everyone to fit into the "norm" we are actually preventing a lot of women from sharing the first most amazing and exciting feeling during pregnancy!! Enjoy the feelings!! :) :)
im nearly 15 weeks and i have felt this weird sensation in my lower left adomen its not sore its like a throbing kind and moving slightly its hard to explain. is this a flutter?
To Stephy124: This might've been your first flutters. It's pretty early to feel much at not-quite-15 weeks, but you definitely could be feeling the beginnings of it. You'll know for sure in the next few weeks if it continues periodically (or if it was a one- or two-time thing, like your body just adjusting or gas, etc). My first feeling of quickening was 18 weeks - it felt like air poofs, like someone had an air gun inside me and was shooting little pops of air at my belly. It was very faint, but VERY cool. It happened a few times a day at first, and then by 20 weeks, it happened more often. By 23 weeks, it was much stronger, and by 24 weeks, my husband could feel it from the outside (but barely).
As for Mom-of-3 who first posted this, I'm not trying to criticize, but it really is impossible to feel the baby's "quickening" at 5 weeks (ask your OB or look in any materials written by the experts). You might have been feeling other things, like your uterus adjusting, or your digestive system working, etc (a pregnant woman's body is all out of whack!), but at 5 weeks, which is just 2-3 weeks past conception, this bundle of cells the size of a grain of rice would not be large enough to feel, EVEN if it had arms and legs already. It's the same as not being able to feel a capsule of tylenol move through your stomach after you swallow it....you just can't feel it. I'm surprised you would think it was quickening at week 5 when A) you said you're studying to be a nurse, and B) you've already been pregnant and know what to watch for. But the bottom line is: I wish you (and all the pregnant ladies) all the best. God bless everyone - smooth pregnancy and wonderful delivery to all!!!
Hello all :) I feel quickening and I am 6 weeks pregnant. This is my second pregnancy. My first pregnancy I first felt quickening at 14 weeks. It is not gas bubbles either. I know what quickening feels like, and It doesn't feel like any gas I've ever had. As a matter of fact I have never had gas in my pelvic area. The bowel/colon is not that low. This is a fact.
It is possible to feel quickening early. One thing that has been said on this blog is that at 5 weeks its impossible to feel quickening because the baby is just a "clump of cells". Well this is not true at all. The baby is actually described as looking like a tadpole with a placenta.
My OB/Gyn told me that in all her experience with moms-to-be reporting quickening early, two things have happened. They are either farther along in their pregnancy (3-5 weeks more) or they are pregnant with twins or multiples.
I believe I am really six weeks, but it scares the heck out of me to think that I may be having twins. (Statistics show that twins run high with women over 30 and higher with women over 35). I am 36. SCARRRY!!!!
I felt "flutters" at week 13, but only once. Then around week 16 I had my hand on my belly and felt 3 little pokes. I could only feel them if my hand was on my belly. Around week 19 or 20, I started feeling them without my hands being in my belly! It is AMAZING! I'm 27 weeks now and my little girl moves ALL the time! Sometimes I just sit there and stare at my belly going up and down. The other day I shook my belly and then I could see/feel the baby moving back into the comfortable position. It's pretty funny!
Gas bubbles often feel the same as when you begin to feel your baby move, it could be that.
Hope this helps!
Yes, you can certainly feel gas bubbles in your lower intestines near your colon.
