Nevus Sebaceous

Nevus Sebaceous

I just had my daugther's one year check up and she has had an orange "birthmark" on her scalp and the doctor diagnosed it as a nevus sebaceous of Jadasson and I researched it and am FREAKING out.  She is healthy, active and above average in intelligence but I read the association of seizures, Mental retardation, bone malformation etc...If she is otherwise healthy, she wont suddenly develop these other symptoms, right?!  The pediatrician didnt seemed alarmed...I will take her to the dermatalogist but I am flipping out, please share your stories with me..***@****.  Thanks, Concerned Mom

hi kim! my daughter has a nevus sebaceous on her face. she's now 5, beautiful and very healthy. we recently went to the dermatologist for a check-up. he says to bring her back when she's 10, and consider plastic surgery for removing the nevus. she knows all her letters and numbers and is very bright, so don't worry :). most kids who have nevus sebaceous are normal.

I am a 33 year old woman, with a large nevus sebaceous on my left cheek and neck. I am a college graduate, and I'm starting a masters program in the fall. My parents nor pediatrician did not notice it during at birth and it only became  large and thick during puberty. I have no others problems. I did see a specialist during my early 20s who had no idea what it was and said live with it.  On a recent visit to a plastic surgeon for other issues, he notice the mark and asked me questions. So, I concerned myself lucky! Finally I’m having it removed in July and although I will have a new scare I’m looking for to having this one GONE! So don’t worry, it’s not the end of the world. Just have it cut off, and live life. :)

I am a 27 y/o female who just had a nevi sebaceous removed from my forhead last month. I have completed my masters degree anad don't have any of the other symptoms that can sometimes go along with these types of birthmarks. I went to the dermatologist as a kid and the doc said to keep an eye out for any changes but if it doesn't bother me then he recommended I live with it since I would be replacing it for a big scar anyway. About 2 years ago I noticed the lower half becoming more bumpy and dry which made me pick at it more and caused it to bleed. I decided to go get it checked out after my boryfriend went to the dermatologist and had a melanoma removed. The dermatologist explained that nevi sebaceous have an increased risk of developing basal cell carcinoma, and sure enough basal cells were found in the lower half of my birthmark. I'm glad I had it removed and no longer have to deal with it even though now I will have a long scar from my eyebrow to hairline.

My daughter was born without NS.  She developed a flat shiny flat bald spot at the back of her head at 5 months old.  At age 9, we saw a dermatologist who told us to have it removed by age 12.  At 14, the appearance kind of change (rough) so we went back to a dermatologist for consultation. He didn't seem alarmed but we had it surgically removed and biopsied.  It was benign. After a few months, the scar/ flat baldness came back again.  The doctor told us it is possible to happen.  We are just grateful it is not cancerous but we are still concern for any probable effects it may have on her.  She is a lovely smart honor student active girl.  She just celebrated her sweet 16th birthday and no symptoms of mental retardation whatsoever. We intend to have it checked periodically in the future.-KC

My daughter is 6 years old. So beautiful and very smart. She was born with the nevus sebaceous birth mark on the side of her head (her temple at hair line). We see dermatologist once a year, just to check in. Make sure there are no changes. As long as there are no changes they will take off at ten years old. I was told make sure you apply sun block, you dont want to get sun burn on it. But as for picking at it I would try to discourage her from doing so.
