OH THE HEARTBURN!!!

by Tanker Chic, Sep 03, 2007 05:59PM
I am 14wk pg and have had consistent heartburn the whole pg.  I thought it would starting getting better around this time, but it is actually getting worse.  It is EVERY day.. mild usually during the day and worse at night.  I am taking tumbs and/or pecid everyday..

Any advice out there?? I could use some help on this!!

Thanks, Hannah

I know this will sound totally disguesting (sp?), but baking soda and water is a sure cure for heartburn.  If you can stand to drink it, it should really help.  Good luck!

when i was pg with my daughter i had HORRIBLE heartburn. my doc told me to BURN the toast, i mean to the point where its almost on fire.  then eat it, it tasted awful but it worked very well. dont be tempted to put any butter on it LOL. plain old burnt toast.

I'm 35wks and mine has only gotten worse. At first I lived off of tums, then zantac and now that those have quit working I'm on Pepcid. My best advice would be to rotate those three. I hope that yours gets better.

Thanks all... I'll try all of your suggestions, except for the toast.. I'm not going to lie.. I appreciate the thought, but I don't think I could get that down.. I'd be trading heartburn for nausea :)

Thanks again!!

All I can say is good luck! When im pregnant I have constant heartburn to the point where Tums dont help anymore. I wish you the best of luck I really do cause I know what thats like!

Sorry, I don't have the cure, other than Tums.  And I recommend the new smooth kind.  But I was just reading in one of those baby/pregnancy magazines about one of the myths regarding pregnancy-the one that says that if mom is suffering severe heartburn, baby will have lots of hair.  Seems some researchers somewhere (I forget the details) set out to disprove the myth and actually ended up proving it to be true.  Maybe no bald baby for you??  :)

Here in the UK (not sure if it's a world wide seller) they make something called Gaviscon, my doctor prescribed it in my last pregnancy- it is the BEST thing I have ever taken for heartburn. They make an original flavour which I can't stand which is aniseed tasting but I can take the mint flavour no problem. They have recently introduced their own Gaviscon tablet version like Tums or Rennie - I haven't tried them but imagine they'd be great also.

Out of interest I just checked it out apparently it contains an algenate (?) solution that sits on top of your stomach contents to stop the acid coming up and that's how it works, creating a barrier sort of effect.....and there's a list of stockists i think that may be a help to you.  Check with your Dr it's safe to take first as I was in my last trimester when I was prescribed it, so it may not be suitable ...

Wish I had some great and wonderful suggestion to solve the heartburn question - all I can offer is some humor - we'll be fifteen weeks tomorrow and I'm not having heartburn - instead I am burping and farting like crazy - thank goodness I work with kids - I can blame the farts on them - have a good day and good luck with the heartburn - I've always heard that old wives tale that heartburn means you will have a baby with LOTS of hair - maybe you are giving birth to Cousin Itt!

I had horrid heartburn while I was pregnant and Tums didn't work, Dr said don't take them, they'll make it worse. She prescribed me two Zantac 150s a day. They are expensive, but worth it. Ask your dr.

Oh NO!!!  My MIL told me my dh was born with that thing (can't remember what it is called) where they have really thin fine peach fuzz type of hair all over them!! The old wise tale must be true!!

Either way, DH is chilean so he/she probably will have A LOT of hair :)  His nephew came out looking like Don King.  But much cuter!!

Reno - I have the gassy issue also..  I have two cats and a dog, so I blame it on them :)

Oh yeah, and thanks for all the GREAT advice.  I'm sure I have time to try it all!!

I had horrible heartburn w/ my dd...now I have it again, and I have not been able to find much relief other than maybe a minute or two from tums...they only work momentarily(sp?) for me..I'll have to try some of these suggestions, because nothing has worked for me at all!
