So far I only buy organic milk for DD.
I ask because I recently realized the dramatic price difference between organic milk and regular milk. It made me question if it's worth it, but I can't bring myself to buy regular for her.

I have never made an organic purchase... Figured I made it this far with never eating organic. I am sure Quinn will be just fine.

To each their own...

Most of the containers of regular milk in the store make the consumer aware that they do not use hormones on the dairy cows.

I do not buy organic unless it is on sale and less expensive. I grow a completely organic garden, that it where we get a majority of our fresh produce.

Nutritionally, there is no difference. I also read a very revealing story about "organic" produce and how basically the certification is simply purchased and little QC is involved. A company pays their "dues" and they have 1 annual visit to "check" and that is it.

interesting...
i guess i'm just confused by all the information out there. I am also nervous about the whole hormone thing. i was a big milk drinker growing up. it was all i drank with every meal and even as snacks. I hit puberty very young and i was under 10 when i got my period. i always wondered if that had something to do with it since no one in my family (mom, aunts, sister, etc...) was like that. i don't want that for my daughter if i can prevent it. I guess that would be an interesting poll- when did you get your first period. we could do an informal survey to see if there was any kind of anecdotal link between drinking a lot of milk and early puberty

You might be on to something.

I hated milk as a kid and refused to drink it (still do). I didn't start my period until the month of my 14th birthday. I have 3 sisters who were all milk drinkers and one started her period at the age of 10, and the other two at age 11.

We buy our meat in bulk from a local farmer who raises his cattle without steroids and or hormones and put it in the freezer.  We have been to his farm, and the cattle are treated very well, grain and grass fed only.  Not only is it healthier for us and the cows, but it works out to be cost effective also.  The cost is about 2.00 - 2.50/lb for steaks, roasts, and burger.  I would like to have a garden this summer for produce.  I also splurge for organic dairy products for the baby.

I would like to, but they just charge too much for it all.  I will sometimes for eggs and for baby food but that is really it.  I mainly do on the baby food, just because that is what they will have the most variety of.

I can't afford to buy organic....I grow and can food, and I make the healthiest choices I can afford for my family. It's the best I can do.

Eggs, definately free range organic, mostly becasue I can't stand the environment non organic non free range chickens are forced to live in. Some produce I will buy organic but I tend to try to buy local as often possible. If there were local apples or organic apples from 1/2 way round the world I would go local. I tend to think more of our 'carbon footprint', rather than worrying too much about it being organic or not. If it's local, organic and reasonably priced that is even better. I always buy a local farms organic salad; it is less than a buck more expensive than the non organic from the other side of Canada and it is a better quality.

I also buy free range organic eggs. I try and buy other organic food when I can but it hard with how expensive the food is.

We buy all organic food. Lots comes from local Farmers Market and for our meat we also buy from local farmers. Then what we can't get from them we shop at Krogers Organic section or Raisin Rack or Whole Foods.  Organic baby food really isn't much difference in price if you use coupons which we do!

i'm going to come up with a thread asking people that question. i would love to use a poll format, but i can't figure out a simple way to do it. what's "early" and what's "a lot" of milk. so i'll probably just start a regular thread.

it is very hard in montana to find a lot of organic produce, etc.  when you do find it, it is almost 3 times as much as non-organic foods.  we live on a budget, so it's just not in our finances to do so.  i also was a HUGE milk drinker growing up...our household of 3 (my mom, brother and i)  went through 2 gallons of 2% a day!!  however i didn't start my period till i was 13.  it would be interesting if there were a correlation with girls starting their periods younger and younger and milk.  i believe, however, that it has to do with our environment in general and not just the hormones in milk

Kemps Select (not sure if it's available everywhere??) makes milk without the hormone in it. I bought it for a few years and then decided we go through too much milk and went back to buying the cheaper milk. My two oldest girls both got their menstrual cycles when they were around 14, so I don't think it affected their cycles but that was the reason I started looking for the milk without the hormone. Other than that, I do not buy organic, other than buying some fruits and veggies from a local orchard. It's too expensive.
