by mjrichards21, Apr 02, 2008 04:08PM
past few days my daughter has had a cold, then yesterday she started of with wheezing and breathing bad
we took her to local walk in clinic who said she had bronchilitos
yesterday she took 13oz of milk
today only 9oz and she is now asleep
her breathing has eased but she is still in pain and still refusing to feed
she takes her solids fine 3 jars a day but formula i struggle to give her
i know this is not enough fluid and she should be taking more
but my husband say's she is fine and not dehydrated
i want to take her to hospital so at least they can try and do something before she does get
dehydrated
Am I Just Panicking???

My dd is sick too.She has a terrible cold & will not drink her bottle.I think it has to do with the stuffy nose. She'll eat her finger foods just fine & baby food. What I noticed works is giving her some from my cup.I don't think she's(my baby) dehydrated bc she goes to the restroom(pee) just fine.If you are concerned I would get her checked,Sorry about the bronchitis.Hope she feels better.

If she's not peeing she is dehydrated and needs to be seen.    Are her eyes looking sunken in?   Lips dry?  If you pinch the skin on her hand does it stay in place or go right back down?  It should go down.

call your regular pediatrician. chances are they'll want to see her to make sure she's ok. but don't panic. dd (8.5 months) was sick recently and barely eating. the dr said these days diapers are so efficient in absorbing liquid parents often think diapers are dry when they're not. is her mouth wet? if she's eating solids give things like applesauce that have alot of moisture in it. make the oatmeal runnier. try something like pedialite. dd refused water but drank the sweet red pedialite. chances are she's fine, but i would call the ped and see what they say.

If baby has tears and a wet mouth, baby is not dehydrated.  I know that bronchiolitis can be scary and stressful, as I've experienced it myself.  All I can do is suggest that you feed baby extra solid foods that are watery, such as pureed carrots.  Add water or formula to the carrots and see if that works to get some extra fluids in.  You can also try pedialite or another fruit juice.  Do not worry about the sugar content in the fruit juice.  If baby likes it better for the sugar, it is far better than drinking nothing at all.
Failing all of that, when I took my daughter to children's hospital with bronchiolitis, they told me she still had tears and they had other children to deal with.  Sounds rough, I know...I was scared and so I felt angry.  I was told I had to practice some tough love.  There are ways to force fluids.  Using a syringe or a dropper to place fluids into the back of the throat so baby will swallow it.  If baby spits it out anyways, you can blow into baby's face immediately after putting the fluids in and baby will swallow out of reaction to blowing in the face.
I know it sounds unloving, but it isn't really.  Its for baby's own good.  Also, if you are given liquid medication for baby to take, the quick blow in the face will make baby swallow that as well if you are having difficulties.
Don't be afraid to be creative.  Try some different juices, too.  Some juices are a little strong, and should be diluted with about 1/3 water so that the taste will not be so overpowering to baby.  Good luck with everything and let us know what has worked for you when it comes to getting fluids into your baby!

i guess this an american based site???
i rang nhs direct and they told me take straight to hospital as she has not had a wet nappy since 4.30pm
5 of the 9oz where fed through a syringe but then she refused
i normally literally hold her down and force it into her throat but she screams so bad i feel guilty
she wont drink juice or water
her lips are fine and skin goes back down
my family say best to take the precaution now before she does end up dehydrated
will reply again with outcome once i am hope
thank you for all you replys

All the best to you.  Just remember that if you are seeing signs that lead you to believe you should be taking her in to be seen or to the hospital, trust your instincts.  Difficulty breathing, wheezing, choking on loose phlem and mucus, and ESPECIALLY if you see baby's tummy sucking up under her ribs and she tries to inhale, this is the worst sign of breathing difficulty.

Aside from that, yes, precautions taken to prevent dehydration are really the best you can do.  The more hydrated you can keep baby, the less sticky and thick her mucus and discharges will be.  That means baby's body will be able to deal with that yucky stuff much better and be able to flush it out of the system quicker.  So keeping baby hydrated will hasten recovery a lot and help baby to not feel so panicky because mucus is building up.

Good luck!

ok, if i was you i would defienately take the precaution. I dont want to alarm you, but babies can become dehydrated extremely quickly.  My 1 yr old suffers from urine infections and gastrou interitus quite severly and has been hospitalized twice.
I would seriously advise you to take her to the hospital.  But make sure you are firm with them that she has not had a wet nappy for so long.  This is usually a sign that she is dehydrated, or will soon become dehydrated.
Hope all is ok with her.

just another tip,if you pinch her skin it should go white, it should take no more than 2 seconds to return to normal colour.  Anything over 2 secs is another sign of dehydration.
