This seems odd....

This seems odd....

I am just curious...my nephew is a year old. (Just turned one this week) I kept him overnight this past weekend and was amazed at what my sister in law had for him to eat. He had 3 daily meals of only 1/2 jar of baby food and 8oz. 2% milk. No table foods and STRICTLY only 1/2 jar of baby food. I have worked in daycare for many years and most kids I have been around that are at this age are usually eating table foods, etc. He has  a mouth full of teeth and is not overweight for his age. Does anyone find this odd or am I the only one? Just curious! Thanks!

That is very odd. I wonder if he might be going hungry...... My son at WHOLE piece of pizza on his first birthday. 1/2 a jar is NOT enough food. I wonder what her dr. is telling her. That is insane!

They need to get used to the taste and texture of different food by this age and they enjoy holding a spoon (it is good practice) and trying it out for themselves. That amount would be fine only IF it was in addition to other foods and finger foods (i.e. cheese cubes, etc.). Other moms can be sensitive to another mom suggesting something so perhaps you can talk to her about what the doc has recommended or casually ask her if it would be ok to feed him some finger foods or discuss in a non-confrontational way what your child ate at that age or your child's favorite foods... It is possible that the new mom just has no idea and has read this somewhere.

Doesn't seem like nearly enough food to me,  either.  What else is your sister in law like?  Is she extremely  controlling,  and weight-conscious?

Does the baby seem malnourished?

I've known one year olds who have severe textural issues,  who only eat pureed foods like baby food,  but there is no limit on it,  and the mothers are clear they want their babies eating more.

I think you should talk to her about it,  and ask at least why there is such a strict limit.

My kids were eating curried chicken by 12 months.
They wanted real people food very early on.

Thanks for all your responses! I am glad to know that everyone else agrees with me here! The big problem I have is that I am only 16 weeks pregnant with no other children. This is her 2nd child so I don't feel right telling her that I think he could use more to eat. He has had ear infection from 2 months on and still has a slight one. It just occurred to me, too that he is using a stage 1 nipple on his bottles which is probably requiring him to suck to hard at his age. This really frustrates me!! I am thinking of talking to my mother in law about this because I don't feel it is right! He is not malnourished at all, but he was nursed til he was 9 months so naturally he is a little bigger...but that will taper off! I'm done ranting and raving now...sorry! :)

Mommyluv is right.  No 1 year old should be on low fat milk.
The amount described of baby food is ridiculous for a 1 year old.  Does she limit him to this amount and he is hungry, or will he not eat and this is the most she can get him to take?

You don't have to have other children to know this is wrong.  Simply start out with the low fat milk issue, and ask why she is using it.  Show her some articles.

Here's a good guide on food intake for age 1 and 2:

This one specifically mentions brain growth and whole milk:

my dd didnt eat that much when she was nursing all the time, but now she eats more then twice that(she turned one on feb 22) she also snacks throughout the day with crackers and such, and drinks probably 3 bottles of milk, ya that seems like not enough food to me....
