Treating ear infection

by decogrl, Oct 31, 2007 02:36PM
Okay, I know there is a lot of debate about cold medicines, etc but what about treating an ear infection??? I had allergy to penecillian, and DH did not.  DD was prescribed amoxicillin for the ear infection, but I am a little nervous about it.  What are your thoughts???  Doctor said it should be fine but given the reaction I had to it as an infant (I swelled up in hives) I am afraid

my son recently had his first ear infection also and my ped prescribed amoxicillin as well. my mother is allergic and although i am not, i was afraid to give it to him also. the ped said it should be fine but, unfortunately, the only way to know if he is allergic is to give it to him. as for other meds to give for an ear infection, i had asked that question to my ped before the ear infection came about and she said unfortunately there is nothing. she said, a cold is a cold and the child's body will either fight it off or it will become an infection in the sinuses/ears and at that point you need an antibiotic to kill the infection or it will only get worse. good luck. hope your little one feels better soon.

In an baby under two, they really do need to be treated for it with antibiotics. Here is a little back story for you. My dad had a near death experience from Sulpha and my sister and I both have violent GI reactions to it. when my oldest was being weaned, he got an ear infection. Tried amox, it didn't work. We were then given Augmentin (I avoided sulpha for fears of the family curse) which is a mix of amox and another med. Right before my eyes he developed huge welt like hives. We gave him benadryl and they disappeared. We then had to go to sulpha and it cleared up without any issues.

Start with the amox, it takes more than one exposure to show an allergic reaction, so this firts shot shouldn't cause any issues. Keep some children's benadryl on hand and ask the pharmacist for the proper dose. Give her the med during the day when you will be with her, just to be safe. If she reacts, there are other meds.

Oh, Sue.  I'm sorry poor Ameera's going through it :((  I'd say keep benadryl handy in case she does develop some reaction to it.  I hope she feels better soon.

I did not see the invite, however I did email you with Ameera's costume pics...

Doll China, yes I saw your email...your situation is different...you CAN communicate with your parents..I CANNOT communicate to MIL, and it is so darned frustrating sometimes..anyway, I think I am going to talk to a social worker my aunt recommended if anything, for ME to get a bunch of stuff off my chest.  All I know is if things don't get any better with a new bigger house, I am so out of this relationship and I already told DH..

I did give the baby the Amox so will see what happens...interesting my DH asked me why was I taking baby to the doc when all she had was a little cold..darned if I am not always right about my instincts...thank goodness!
