Weight Gain and Exercise

Hi, I know a lot of women worry about this, but i am 24w6d and have already gained 17 pounds. Is there anything I can do to slow this down? Any exercises that someone could recommend?

If you are not over eating I think 17 lbs is fine.  With my DD I gained a total of 42lbs and most of that I gained at the beginning of my pregnancy.  by the time I was 20 weeks I had gained 15.  When I had her I had so much fluid in me my water broke 3 times.  I lost all of the weight in about 3 or 4 weeks because most of it was fluid and swelling.  With this pregnancy I am 15weeks and I have only gained 8 so far.  Don't try to lose weight now, you can worry about that when the baby is born.

17 lbs isn't too much for being 20 weeks.  Walking for 30 minutes a day is the best exercise while your pregnant.  Listen to me, I'm giving advice on walking everyday and I go about once or twice a week!  LOL!

At the rate I am going, I will be about where you are.  I am 10w and put on 7pounds.  I can go from 147 one day to 144 the next, so I am sure most of my weight gain is water.  I was jogging everyday, but have turned to jogging for about 15min and walking another 15.  I do this everyday, but haven't done anything for 4days now. Opps, guess I got to go out today.  Question, are you showing yet?

I have gained 14 lbs. and I am only 16 weeks.  Everyone is different, I am definitely not overeating but I should exercise more.  Walking is good exercise for you.  :)

Like everyone else, I recommend walking.  It will make you healthier and should make you stronger for delivery.  You may want to look into joining one of those exercise groups for expectant Mom's.  Many times they are free and are held at churches, library's, or community centers.  They will do a lot of exercise with those big exercise balls or do swimming.  I hope that helps.

Blessings!

After gaining 25 pounds by my 2nd trimester I was mortified.  I started swimming religiously every day from 6 month until the end.  I gained 38 pounds and have lost all but 8 of it.  I highly recommend it if you can find an indoor pool. It is soooo relaxing and easy on joints/back. It was the best thing I ever did.  I resumed swimming at 7 weeks post partum and still love it!

I gained about 45 pounds total, and a lot of it was in the first two trimesters.  After my daugher was born, I lost all but 5 pounds in a month (I'm pretty small to begin with), and lost all of it plus an extra two or three pounds three months later.

Don't worry about it.  Relax and enjoy!

One more quick tip....be sure to nurse your baby.  That takes aproxx 1500 to 2000 calories more per day to produce milk.  That will not only help you lose weight after birth but also pull your uterus back where it belongs and help you to stop bleeding sooner.  The Docs are also linking it to lower breast cancer rates in those who nurse. Not to mention the bonding you get with your baby.  Milk is always ready...no measuring, mixing or heating.  Perfect food and it's best for both of you.

Blessings!
