When will my newborn sleep through?

When will my newborn sleep through?

I was wondering when my baby girl who is nearly 6 weeks will start sleeping better - I'm not sure what's classified as sleeping through the night but I'm so exhausted and tired I dont even have the energy to pick up the phone. My eyesight is blurry and I have a constant headache. My husband and I were apparently sleeping about 7 hours at 6 weeks old. Help?

Our daughter slept through the night for the first time at 18 months.  The first almost 12 month she was up every 2 hours.  I feel your pain. Our son slept through the night pretty much from the get go- I'd wake him up to feed him- so every kiddo is so different.  I'm due any minute so it will be exciting to see what this one does.  There's no way to MAKE them sleep through the night and at 6 weeks, I wouldn't be expecting her to sleep through the night.  Good luck.  I know it's exhausting- some days I wonder how I will do it with three!

Just to throw a spanner in the works - be prepared for your daughter to change her pattern once she has established a routine for awhile.  My daughter started sleeping though the night from about 6 weeks to 4 months but since then has been waking up 1-4 times a night to nurse; she is now close to 5 months old.  So even when your daughter starts sleeping better, there is no way to predict how long that might actually last.  Illness, a growth spurt, and teething are a few things that will effect an "established" sleeping pattern.

My daughter slept through the night at 4 months. To this day (she is now 23 months) she sleeps 12 hour nights...   I am hopeful my next one will sleep this well. :)

My sons slept through the night (12 hours) pretty early on but my 5month old DD is my party animal and enjoys cuddles, nursing and sleeping only a few hours at a time at night...I think sleeping through the night is generally classified as 6 hours or more and my DD has done that a few times but for the most part she goes 4 hours then nurses and then 4 hours again. All babies are different. If possible, sleep when your baby sleeps during the day. It'll pass and eventually she will sleep through the night but it is rough to go without sleep.

Since babies are so variable, what you probably need to do is work out some way to get some care for the baby during the day so you yourself can nap, and/or to work out a better schedule of sharing the night feedings with your husband.  Can a family member come for a couple of hours every day or every other day, just to hold the fort so you can get some sleep?  No one who has ever been a mother would fail to understand such a request.

I remember being there.  Heck, I'm still there.  DD started sleeping through the night (12 hours) at 4 months.  When she started teething (at 6 months), it all stopped.  She began to wake again and it still continues.  My DS never slept through the night (he just turned 8 months).  The most he slept was 5 hours.  Try to get as much rest as you possibly can when she's napping during the day.  Hang in there, they do start sleeping through eventually.

My son slept through the night at 1 month from 3am to 10am. He has never done that again ever since. He is two month now and wakes up once a night now for feeding and a change.

You clearly got enough responses, but just wanted to share my experience thus far... My son will sleep for long stretches, but he wakes up 2-3 times in the night now, where as around 2-3 months he slept through the night wonderfully (What happened??) He is now 5 1/2 months old... He will sleep a total of about 10 hours or so.. But it was around 8-12 weeks mine started sleeping through the night, but it didn't last long for me! I hope you've better luck. But, almost all of us here have been where you are now, and remember it clearly!! I recall 2-3 hours of sleep in one 24 hour period. And thinking 5 hours of sleep was a god-send.. Hahah. Hang in there, it does get better!

as Spade22 and Me2mommy2b said, I think is the case with me, when they begin teething, they don't sleep as well, and also become more aware of their surroundings the older they get, so they awake more easily. Teething has a lot to do with it, though.

Boy hon I feel for you but all I can say is get used to it!!!  My daughter just started sleeping through the night at 9-1/2 months.  My 2y old niece still wakes up at night at least once a week.   I agree with the others though - when my daughter got her two bottom teeth she woke up every couple hours like a newborn but that wasn't until 5-6 months.  Just keep at it - this time will pass and eventually you will get more sleep.  (or you will just get used to the exhaustion!)

I know what you aregoing through too!  My boys were colicky, so at 6 weeks they were both still up most of the night screaming.  My eyes were blurry, my hearing was even affected.  It was rough.  Carson got better after 1 yr.  Cameron finally started about 2 months ago, he's 19 months now.  He would get up every 2 hours till around 8 months, then he spread it out a little more, but would still get up at least twice a night.  He also went to bed between 10 and 11 and was up by 5.  Had a coworker whose son is 4 days older than my little one.  Hers slept through the night within the first week.  He still goes down by 7 and sleeps till 8 sometimes 9 in the am.  I think it's crazy ands she is talking to her ped about the sleep pattern as her little one is small for his age and still takes 2 naps a day that are at least 1 sometimes 2 hours.  Each kiddo is different.  Hang in there.
