removal adnoids tonsils in relation tearduct

by spank, Nov 01, 2006 12:00AM
Due to blocked tear ducts we had stents put in(january) and removed after several months(2 year old boy),it cleared up well, sometimes he will get some discharge and infection from one eye. We the visited several ear, nose and throat doctors in n.y.  All have said we should remove his tonsils and adnoids they are extrmely enlarged. The doctor who gave us the most confidence reccomends we scrape the tonsils down and not remove them same w/ adnoids.
My questions:
1.Have you heard of this?Feeling?
2.Will it possibly stop the tear duct situation as far as discharge, since we have been told adnoids act as a cork and can block the fluids from draining through tear duts?

I have never heard of scraping the tonsils. My son had his tonsls removed and his adnoids scraped when he was three. It is a fairly quick process. About 45 min. But it is so sad to see your child in that much pain. They prescribed my son oxycodine. VERY strong medicine. He was so out of it. He was in so much pain that he wouldnt eat or drink anything. And when they are that little, they dont understand how important it is to drink liquids to keep their throat moist. Needless to say that they had to readmit him for dehydration and we felt like bad parents. So when or if your son does it done. BE PREPARED. It is a heart breaker. Good Luck. Oh, it was about a two week healing process. So you should ask if the scraping as opposed to the cutting is less painful on the recovery.

I have never heard of scraping the tonsils before.
My dd had her tonsils & adnoids removed & tubes put in her ears at age 4. The surgery was an out patient surgery and we were home before lunch. She had no problems post surgery.

Melissa is right and I hope I didnt scare you before. You usually go home a few hours after the surgery. My son was just an exception. It usually doesnt go bad.
