You say you have been on birth control but had unprotected sex. I am not sure what you mean. Do you mean you are on birth control pill but didn't use extra protection of say using condom at the time of intercourse? If you are on birth control pill, then I'll say your sex was and is 'protected' without any additional protection. If you mean you normally use birth control (condom. etc) but didn't on this particular occasion, then you could be pregnant depending on where you are on your cycle.
I don't know where you live, but if you live in Europe, depending on when you had unprotected sex, you might still be able to use the morning after pill (if your wish is to not get pregnant). I do not know what is like in the US.
Otherwise you should be able to take the home pregnancy test from the date of your missed period.
