Too early to see a fetal pole.  Maybe next week.  Don't start worrying yet.

These are just my thoughts - but, sometimes I don't think people (including dr.'s) hear the words they use when they speak.  Therefore, one word may mean something to someone and that same word can mean something completely different to anyother.  The word "normal" for a pregnant woman means a great deal - everything! And, when a dr. says they can't say it is "normal" yet, it sends us into a panic.

Honestly, it is still too early to see the fetal pole at your gestation.  Although, some woman do see the gestational sac at this point, some do not.  Remember, the sac is just a black circle.  Sometimes hard to pick up on a u/s.  As fars as the fetal pole, I did not see mine until 6.5 weeks.  So, give it a week, go back and have another u/s.  Please please try to relax.  A very large percentage of pregnancy progress just like they should - at this point - there is no reason to fear that your pregnancy wont be just perfect.   One more suggestion - if your dr. uses any words that are going to worry you, make him explain exactly what he means.  Dr.'s are busy, but you pay for care.  They need to take the time and explain things to put your mind at ease.

I hope this helps to ease your mind.  Good luck to you and Congratulations.

For crying out loud! I hate doctors.....I really do! We didn't see a fetal pole until 7 weeks!!!!! At my 6 week u/s there was just an empty gestational sac. My doctor told me that with my HCG being so high (20,000 ish) that it was probably a blighted ovum and to prepare for a D & C. I'll have you know that I am now 31.2 weeks pregnant with a very healthy and active little boy!

Good Luck with everything!!!! And try not to stress too much....I know that week of waiting was awful for me!

I think it's to early.  I didn't have my first ultrasound until 6 weeks 5 days because my doctor said any earlier then that you might not be able to see anything.

It is very normal to not see a fetal pole at 5w5d.  I would relax.  I never saw one w/all four pregnancies.....until 6-7 weeks.

And even if you don't see anything next week......dont' worry yet! Like I said, it was 7 weeks before we saw ANYTHING! :)

Thanxs so much for the encouragement. I was pregnant in march, and had a blighted ovum and they kept checking my HCG Levels every other day, and they were rising and the black sac thinging was getting much bigger but my levels weren't rising fast and there wasnt anything in the sac. so around April 28 i had a D & C. And that was the most painful thing. i mean to be 17 find out your pregnant in high school, fearing your mom will kill you (even thought she was actully excited) and telling your boyfriend who wants nothing to do with it....then finally accepting im pregnant, he accepted it, and my mom did as well...and then having to loose something like that. it was so painful. But now im pregnant and its not a blighted ovum, but im worried something will happen to it.

The doctor did move the u/s prob around and he said he thought he saw the bigging of a fetal pole but it was small and i would have to wait till next week to tell for sure. so all of your comments really helped. i have been looking online for the difference betweek 5 weeks and 6 weeks and theres quite a bit of difference so im thinking by next week things wil be ok. hopefully

I understand what you are going thru.....I'm worried about the same thing.  My LMP was April 24th...found out I was pregnant May 28th...went for my first u/s on June 7th saw just a gestational sac....so they pushed me back a week to 5wks scheduled another u/s on June 21st they saw a small fetal pole but no heartbeat. And the doctor was concerned because she said would should have seen more being that this day would have made me 7wks...so she took blood work and my HCG level was 13,031 and the next day she wanted me to come back in for more blood work just to make sure they weren't declining and they rose the next day to 14,811.  So with that said I'm waiting for another u/s on July 2nd to see if anything has changed.  I'm just PRAYING that my dates were all screwed up and it took longer for me to ovulate.  From what most of the ladies have said on this site...I've seen alot of situations like ours that have turned out to be successful pregnancies and healthy babies...I'm trying my damnest not to worry but it's hard...Keep the faith and I'll let you know my outcome on Monday.

Dont worry Kim, My doc scared me too by saying she is not sure if this pregnancy will work...My LMP was 6th may 07 and I had a early US on 6th June 07 which showed 1.8mm sac and on 21st June at 6wk 4 days I had US again sac measured 1.58cms (15mm) with Fetal pole and Yolk sac seen, but no heartbeat found and the sac age shows 5wk 6 days. I'm worried as the doctor didnt sound positive until HCG report showed 25950 and after 48 hrs showed 35267. I have my US again on the 2nd July I was very tensed until I found this Forum which has given me relief as I've got to know that many have found the Heartbeat at 8-9 wks...Just stay cool...I know its dificult but be positive...I'm worried too until I get my next US on 2nd July but dont let stress takeover...All the best and my advice wait until 8 Wks and dont take any decision until then...

My pregnancy didnt work out, went on 2nd July for US the baby was not growing and no heartbeat found. Had to terminate the pregnancy. Was completely shattered. Doc aborted by inserting Vaginal tablets, was admitted in hospital the same day. Procedure was very painful and I'm still bleeding and in terrible pain. I would advice if anyone goes thru the same situation please opt for D&C  as thru tablets its very painful. My scan after aborting showed some products still left in there and advised that it will come out in a week and if not then I have to go through D&C anyways. Will be seeing the doc tomr as its very painful still. I wanted this baby anyhow I'm completely shattered. I pray noone should go thru this.
