Do you think Sarah Palin is valid or overeacting about the joke David Letterman made last night about her 14yr old daughter Willow?

For those who just woke up and aren't sure what he said, here's an article about his joke about Sarah Palin's visit to NYC with her 14yr old daughter.

Sarah Palin Not a Fan of David Letterman's 'Rape Jokes'
Written by Kyle Buchanan | 10 Jun 2009, 1:00 PM | 17 comments

Looks like someone’s on Team Conan! During last night’s Julia Roberts-dominated Late Night, David Letterman made some jokes about Sarah Palin’s visit to New York with her 14-year-old daughter, Willow (“They had a wonderful time. The toughest part of her visit was keeping Eliot Spitzer away from her daughter”). This followed a Top 10 List devoted to Palin on Monday, which we’ll reprint below, followed by the Palins’, uh, incendiary reaction.

10. Visited New York landmarks she normally only sees from Alaska
9. Laughed at all the crazy-looking foreigners entering the U.N.
8. Made moose jerky on Rachael Ray
7. Keyed Tina Fey’s car
6. After a wink and a nod, ended up with a kilo of crack
5. Made coat out of New York City rat pelts
4. Sat in for Kelly Ripa. Regis couldn’t tell the difference
3. Finally met one of those Jewish people Mel Gibson’s always talking about
2. Bought makeup from Bloomingdale’s to update her “slutty flight attendant” look
1. Especially enjoyed not appearing on Letterman

Palin took on the “slutty flight attendant” joke while on the air with conservative radio host John Ziegler (“That’s pretty pathetic, good ole David Letterman”) and Politico has the Palins’ response to Letterman targeting Willow:

In an e-mailed statement, the Republican governor said: “Laughter incited by sexually perverted comments made by a 62-year-old male celebrity aimed at a 14-year-old girl is not only disgusting, but it reminds us some Hollywood/N.Y. entertainers have a long way to go in understanding what the rest of America understands - that acceptance of inappropriate sexual comments about an underage girl, who could be anyone’s daughter, contributes to the atrociously high rate of sexual exploitation of minors by older men who use and abuse others.”

Her husband, Todd, added in the same statement that “any ‘jokes’ about raping my 14-year-old are despicable. Alaskans know it, and I believe the rest of the world knows it, too.”

There was nothing funny about a very serious problem that exists in our country.  He has taken a serious situation and turned it into something which gains merit --- no wonder why people continue to behave in society with less dignity and morals than ever before --- people like Letterman (his writers, too) write & say whatever will sell w/o giving credence to those whom are demoralized by the content of his disrespectful humor.

I think both are wrong. I think it is sad that we have arrived at a point in the name of comedy, where we the audience think these things are funny. Letterman insists he was talking bout the older daughter, Palin is now implying that Letterman should not ever be left alone with her daughter ( to me, she is doing the same thing with this statement that she is accusing Letterman of doing?).  I think they are both equally guilty of wanting media attention from it.  To me, they are two peas in a pod.  However, my concern is the audience, and why they watch. That tells me something about the state of our country right there. Personally, I have always found this subject and comedians using it cause they can, in the name of being funny, offensive and it did not start with Letterman. IMO

letterman crossed a line, not even saying Im a fan of Palins that is irrelevant. We should not pick on or poke fun at children of politicians or celeberties. end of story it was wrong

Its called Mysogenism   LOL ... go on I will let the spelling cop tell me I spelt it wrong)So I think he is a nasty piece of work he didnt really apologise either. I agree that comedy has really crossed the line of decency any more now days. Look at Saturday Night Live and how badly they crossed the line about the Palins. Remember that one? They joked about Sarah's husband having sex with his daughters, something about living in Alaska. I don't remember all the details. You can probably google it and find out more. I think the Palins should have sued SNL over that one.
What ever happened to good, decent, clean fun? It's hard to find anymore. That's why I always liked Bill Cosby. He knew how to be funny and still be clean. It can be done.

This is very interesting and I hadn't heard about it.  I agree with everyone on here.  I so much appreciate the point Teko made about what it says about the audience.  SHE HIT THE NAIL ON THE HEAD.  She's right - it tells us a lot about the state of our country.  If people would "stand up to him", (as in, no audience!), he'd be forced to change the stye of his jokes.  Supply and demand.....

I thought that it was disgraceful and disgusting.  His so called apology was just a joke.  Jay Leno would not have ever said anything like this because he knows that it is crossing the line.  I guess that is why he retired since he knew that he did not want to deal with this nonsense any longer.  I never really like David Letterman because of his distasteful comments and jokes.  He really is not very funny anyway.  Jay leno was funny and he had you laughing the whole show.  I totally agree with April2 about Bill Cosby.  I love Bill Cosby.  He is hilarioius but tasteful with his jokes.  I love his skit on Bill Cosby himself regarding the child on a plane.  He is just a great man and other comedians should look to him for what is real about comedy.

No matter how you feel about Sarah Palin, she should never be attacked or her children in any sexual way whatsoever.   But, I also have seen skits on Saturday night Live regarding past President Bush's girls and that was off base as well.  Children no matter what the age should be totally off limits.  It just seems to me that any Republican is fair game as far as the children are concerned but if we were to say anything about Clinton's daughter or Obama's children it would be all over the news and people would lose their jobs over it.  So, where is the outrage from the President and his administration.  I am sorry but no matter what side you are on Democrat or Republican their should be something said about making these jokes on national television.  We all know that the President knows about this and has probably watched it so I would expect him to say that it is disgraceful what David Letterman said.  If he wants people to respect him then he should respect his opponents as well.

Just read this:

NEW YORK - Sarah Palin says comedian David Letterman owes an apology to young women across the country for his joke about her daughter.

The Alaska governor appeared on NBC's Today show Friday, insisting that Letterman "apologize to young women" for a joke he made on the air about one of her teen-age daughters. Letterman admitted on his show that his wisecrack about a theoretical statutory rape of one of Palin's daughters was in bad taste, but didn't go further. Palin, the Republican vice presidential candidate last year, said Friday that isn't good enough.

Letterman had joked that a Palin girl "was knocked up" by a player at a New York Yankees baseball game. He seemed to be referring to 18-year-old Bristol Palin, an unwed mother. But it was her 14-year-old sister Willow who was at the game with family members.

Sarah Palin 3During her appearance on NBC today, Sarah Palin said she thought it was "a degrading comment about a young woman. And I would hope that people would start really rising up and not accepting this."

The governor said "it's no wonder girls have such low self-esteem in America when a comedian can make a remark like this."

Problem is he has taken his humor into his politics he has been after Govenor Palin for a while ...Maybe the left wing Liberals are afraid she could be a threat in 3 years,..I dont think he likes Women and married or not whose to know whats in his closet, maybe some right wing folks should say nasty sex talk about OBamas children or Chelsea Clinton see what reaction there is to that ,...I didnt see any over reaction I saw protection of her daughter.

How did this get into a full blown left wing liberal political bunch of stuff. Letterman was/is wrong and everyone agrees with that! Now, whats to be done about it? Some would thing the pres otta come out and speak, personally I think it is up to us, the viewer to simply turn the channel. When ratings sink and the pocketbook suffers, it will stop! Not until then. As a matter of fact Obama came out during the campaign when Palin was being talked about because she had a daughter that was prego out of wedlock, the children are off limits.  Does no one remember that? Guess not. Letterman is wrong so quit watching him! I dont know that the man dislikes women either.Geesh! And let me be clear, I am not bashing anyone for having an opinion! But I got mine too! The truth is probably somewhere in the middle!

I find David Letterman to be obnoxious at any time! He's been around for so long it's a wonder he doesn't do his show on auto-pilot. Man, we got his show here in Australia about 20 years ago. I have old video tapes with him on it as I let movies run as I recorded them and went to bed...with him as the following show....He has not changed one bit.
I do not know who writes his stuff, but he always seems to giggle from it.
We get his show a day or two later than you guys, but I wouldn't have bothered to turn it on to see what he said about the Palins anyway. I find any joke aimed at a child which refers to sexual innuendos an absolute disgrace.
That's my two cents worth!

Yes most of us feel like that ...it is too much as I have said it is political as he has definatly shown his liberal bias many times, Govenor Pailin is simply responding to his words ...if we walk in her shoes how would we behave, would we not be outraged and protect our child .I have never understood why he has had so many bad words to say about the Palins, I cannot see that she is so awful  to warrent it.Like so many show bus -folks he has a poitical agenda and takes every opportunity to voice it,I hope he gets sacked I doubt it though..look what happened to Imus , who said that stuff about the Girls basket Ball team..he did get the sack, albeit back now, but he was genuinely sorry not like this Twerp.....

Maybe if Palin hadn't featured her pregnant daughter and her fiance so prominently in her campaign the "joke" wouldn't have resonated at all. If there was any humor there, it was in reference to the older daughter and I think everyone with a brain realizes the context in which it was intended.
That being said I too think it was over the line - though not as far as some apparently think it was.
Her daughter and her fiance were paraded all over the campaign trail and I thought that was over the line too. If a politician doesn't want their children exposed to this stuff they should keep them out of the politics. Obama's children were not featured - they were kept away from the media.

Hilary's daughter?

John McCain made this odious joke about Chelsea Clinton back in '98.

Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly? Because her father is Janet Reno."

-- Sen. John McCain, speaking to a Republican dinner, June 1998.

And this is the same man that some people voted for in 2008 for President.
Letterman is a comedian - he never tried to or held himself out as competent to lead our nation.
Still, I agree that his statement was in bad taste. But I also think Palin's trying to milk this for as much as she can. And that's not surprising at all.

I personally think it was horrible for him to make that comment.  I used to listen to David Letterman all the time (loved him), but he started to go over the top and then I turned to Leno.  I think his comment was way out of line.

As far as I'm concerned, children of celebrities and politicians are off limits when it comes to jokes like this.  If they are adult children, that's one thing, but even then I think David Letterman's comments were sick!
