Night headaches

I get severe headaches in the middle of the night that wake me from a sound sleep - these occur several times a month, with no pattern to them.  These headaches do not respond to pain medication, but always go away when I get up in the morning and start moving around - almost like the opposite of a spinal headache that occurs when you are upright, but goes away when you lay down.  I can sometimes get the pain to stop by sleeping upright, but not always - and the pain is pretty severe.  My doctor is mystified, and a neurologist had no diagnosis, either.  Anyone else have this problem?

I have same situation and to read all the posts back to 2009 will give you all kinds of answers but no remedies. You will have to experiment with what others have done. The Brain and The Pain   ..  ..  go hand in hand,..jmg..

I've tried different pillows and even no pillow at all, but I have not tried memory foam, so I will give it a shot.  Thanks

Has your primary physician tested your thyroid via specialized blood test? The test checks and compares two different thyroid hormones and it cannot be determined by standard blood tests.  Around 3:00 AM the thyroid begins the wakeup process in humans by releasing certain levels of thyroid hormones.  There are some Doctors that don't readily consider the thyroid as the problem so make sure your Doctor has completely ruled it out.  For more information see the Thyroid section of Medhelp to help you gain more of an understanding how the thyroid affects many folks.

Hi and welcome to the Migraines & Headaches Community.

The first thing that came to mind when I was reading your post is your pillow. I use to wake up with a migraine every single morning, without fail. So, I got a memory foam pillow...works like a charm. Give it try for about 2 weeks. Please keep us updated.
