HE'S 16 WORKS OUT TWICE A DAY,ABOUT 5'10 AND WEIGHS 130.MY GRANDMOTHER INSPIRED HIM AFTER HE FOUND OUT SHE HAD DIABETES AS A KID AN NEVER TOOK INSULIN UNTIL THE LAST 3 YEARS OF HER LIFE AND SHE WAS 94.

I don't know if I'm allowed to mention the name of the particular eating plan. I don't call it a diet, it's a way of life.
But it's healthy carbs (vegs)/healthy protein (chicken)/healthy fats (some types of nuts, not all!) Oh, knowledge is power. It's called the Zone.
It was out several years ago and while I should follow it, I admit I'm not a zealot. But the basic idea is to watch those carbs!!!!!! You have to have a protein with every meal, every snack!! The body needs the balance! I don't like the food pyramid or whatever the new nonsense it these days on the back of the foods. Counting calories-- ugh.
I worked with a woman on a diet; she'd have a rice cake and a banana. Both seem healthy right? WRONG.
If I eat a "healthy" baked (okay, nuked) potato for lunch, I am out on the couch pretty soon after.
Anyway, it's doable and better than the breakfast bars-- major crash and I speak from experience. Couldn't figure out why when we were at Disney I'd eat from the breakfast buffet (HEALTHY muffin and orange juice?) and wonder why oh why was I so tired and so hungry when I just ate? And had the shakes.

This is what I having been reading in the medical literature for the last couple years. I may have been mistaken in my memory. But, this article states that the cutoff for prediabetes is now 100, so it looks like the level for overt diabetes is now 110.

Hey, it's almost 1pm. I called the office and left a message for assistant to give me a call at work for results (cause I'm IMPATIENTLY waiting LOL) . Haven't heard anything yet. I need to leave - schools closing - winter storm - need to pick up son. Leaving cell # with co worker to give her. So, hopefully they will call today. Sheesh, it shouldn't take this long, should it? Had another eading 2 hrs. post breakfast of 176 this AM. Then one hour later later, not even, it was 62 and shaky again.

That would make alot of sense about the neuropathy study, since we diabetics are taught that damage occurs any time you go above the safe zone, it just happens in small increments and you dont' notice it until it adds up.

Quix was right (of course!) too that I am speaking for the perspective of a Type 1, and do not know how type 2 works differently.
I try to understand why they say anyone cannot be a diabetic when they have above the safe range readings and its ok when activity brings it down. Do non diabetics have a drop in blood sugar when they are active? They cannot go below the safe range, or they have some type of condition, correct?

OK, did my research. 100-125 fasting bs is at least pre-diabetes, if not actual (though quix said there are new guidelines). That would be a blow!! Particularly given my physical activity (which should be preventing such things!).
I also read that random BS at any time over 140 would be considered diabetes. I have had readings higher than than when testing after eating.
Will monitor over a few days and really see. Thanks guys! If it really looks like it, will trot off see my endo sooner rather than later!
Diet improvement, weight loss efforts, and exercise consistency shall have to be stepped up. :( Well, good things, but for a bad reason!
The great thing about this forum is we learn so much and can be more proactive in staying as well as possible.

Do you have info on the FBS over 100 is already looking like diabetes?
I have a home blood sugar test kit. My BS is usually over 100 just after I wake up (most recently ranges between 100 - 115), though it does drop after moving around for a while though without eating (guess that's why my labs for FBS always come back normal).
I got it cause I was going to try to work out if my energy slumps/fatigue are anything to do with blood sugar levels, and 'cause with PCOS I am at high risk of developing diabetes and so thought would be good to monitor. Haven't yet monitored much except am cause I've been focusing on work stuff.

FWIW, there seems to be a lot of research about pre-diabetes/impaired glucose tolerance and peripheral neuropathy, which suggests that you don't have to have full-blown diabetes to have neuropathy problems. See for example http://tinyurl.com/2scbq4, which states that "there is increasing evidence that patients with milder degrees of abnormal glucose metabolism, including impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) and impaired fasting glucose (formerly referred to as 'borderline' diabetes), are also at risk for developing symptomatic polyneuropathy."
On the other hand, the neuro who diagnosed me said they had just finished a study about this which did not find an association between prediabetes and peripheral neuropathy so I guess the jury is still out on this.
I know your name is Sandra, but I'll always think of you as Spanky...There was a really interesting study done when they were discovering the value of knowing a carb's glycemic influence. This is the measured change in blood glucose a given time after eating a certain food. The two foods with the HIGHEST glycemic index, short of eating pure sugar were a surprise. They were cold cereal (including non-sweetened) and baked potatos! Processed cereal and grain cereal as much as they are touted are not your best way to go. If you do chose cereal, don't have it every day, and chose a hot, totally whole grain one like steel cut oatmeal.
I lost 50 pounds doing low carb and did some essays, like I do here, on a eDiet's forum. would you like me to print a copy of the one I did on the Glycemic scale, or is that old news?

Geez Spanky...you sure do it all the way when you do it eh? I am feeling for ya honey and I as all of us do sympathize with the bloody wait. It's sometimes gets to the point where we think that they are making us wait on purpose...no...wait...maybe they are???Maybe they know how much we are anticipating this and they want us to suffer??? I don't know about you but I start to feel this way after a while...don't know if it's paranoia or just having too much time to sit and think about them plotting against us...hmmm?
Anyway, looks to me that they couldn't possibly come back with a negative result honey...HOLY **** BATMAN...What a drop! You be careful! That is way to far and way too quick, no wonder you were shakin'!!! I sure hope that they do get their act together and start to give you some help...no offense but you need help!! tee hee

Yay, not a great morning. Still haven't heard from those guys about my results - getting irked now.
So, at 6:30 am I had a bowl of Rice Krispies (I know - it was my last carb meal!) and some regular coffee with cream. Then at 8:30 (2 hrs. later like I am supposed to) tested it was 179 - then at 10am, I got all shaky, VERY shaky I could hardly get the blood on my stick to test it. It was 74. Oh my goodness - this has never happened to me before like this. WTH is happening to me? I scarfed down a Special K bar, felt a little better, but not much. Scarfed down a package of those Quaker Mini Delights and now I feel pretty good.
So, now I ran off a glucose log on the internet and I am going to write down everything I feel, what my numbers are, etc. etc. and when I eat. If they call and say I don't have diab - I'm going to take that information to my regular GP and show him my numbers. There is NO WAY I am not Diabetic.
Uggggh - Just venting - sorry. Just thought I'd share.

I am with you woman ....on the low carb eating. I got to work today and put my salad in the fridge, went to my desk and cleaned out all those friggen candy canes from the xmas tree I brought to work thinking "gee, I might want one of those someday". Gave my Dove Milk Chocolates OH GAWD to my male coworker and told him to enjoy!" and am after this going directly to a low carb website I used to spend most of my time and going to reintroduce myself and begin again on the low carb. Last summer, I lost 15 lbs. on that and felt wonderful and my self-esteem shot through the roof. I am now FRIGGEN 207.5 on the scale this AM - I am so disgusted with myself I want to throw up LOL!
I don't know honestly if I can give up my diet pepsi. I have been drinking it for years and years my goodness for over 20 years! I honestly don't think that's the problem, however, if I am diagnosed, I will try to give it up slowly and replace every other one wit a water.
Now, about my smoking. I am on the Chantix and slowsly cutting down. My last two packs have been generic off brand yucky ones and they are really tasting like ****. I expect to fully quit in the next week or so. I can't wait to quit completely. In Feb of 2009, my hubby and son (5) are going to Disney World and I want to save money for that. So, when I do quit, I am going to take that $4 and put it in a jar and see how much I have. That will be a nice bundle to spend on making our son smile ;)
Sheesh, I really don' tknow if they are testing that A1C, but I'd bet if I am diagnosed, they will then at the Dr.'s office (my regular GP). I think at the lab, they just took blood before we started the test, then every 1/2 hr after that. Anyway, still waiting for results, which I'm sure they will call for within the next 4 hours.
I must really feel like talking this AM - I will let you guys go and YOU ARE ALL RIGHT, I am so glad I stayed, I feel like this is truly my home and I LOVE YOU GUYS for not putting me in a body bag or cement shoes LOL !!!

I agree with Elaine. I had just mentioned on another thread about the insulin-triggering problems with aspartame. It is poison to the pre-diabetic and the diabetic, too. Stevia is i good choice. If you have to drink a soda use the ones with Splenda. It is chemically altered sugar. It does not stimulate insulin production and is safer in that sense.
Elaine - send Craig our, and especially my, good wishes. I really worry that he is not up to posting. We're all thinking about him.. There's no way, is there, that he won't be able to come out on the 28th?

Hi. Wanted to add one more thing...Nutrasweet has been blamed as causing many neurological abnormalities and in some people mimicking MS. Once the people stopped drinking things with Nutrasweet, the symptoms gradually disappeared. So if you drink diet soda with nutrasweet in it, you might want to stop and see if you feel better in a few weeks.
Also, Nutrasweet causes an insulin spike which will aggravate pre-diabetes. An alternative would be to switch to the sweetener,"Stevia". It is available in packets or larger sizes and you can either buy it at a health store or online (Healthyshopping.com is one web site). Stevia comes from a plant, is totally natural, and does not cause a rise in blood sugar or insulin.

Stopping back in for a second. I have heard the same Elaine, which is what leaves things still open for my situation - the Endo does not believe the diabetes could have caused the amount of damage I have - even with having very high blood sugar - but taking into account the time frame.

Let us know your results Spanky. You will be ok if it is the neuropathy. It very well could be, if you've had numbers hitting those 200's for a length of time I guess. Hang in there!

I just thought I would add that my friend's mother has just been diagnosed with diabetes and diabetic neuropathy. She had not been to a doctor at all in many years and went to the E.R. with vertigo.
Her sugar in the E.R. was over 300 and the doctors think she has had diabetes for at least four years. I do not know why they are calling vertigo diabetic neuropathy but all her tests were normal so they are just saying everything is from diabetes.
My point is that the doctors told her that diabetic neuropathy usually takes years to develop. So hopefully you do not have diabetic neuropathy.

I have been locked out of posting or getting onto the site all day! I am so exasperated! So I'm posting frantically to let you all know I'm here and TRYING!
The newest recommendations I have seen for calling overt diabetes is fasting sugars over 100, so I'm with Jazz. I think you're going to hear that this is diabetes, and they'll begin treatment. What I don't know is how long and at what level you can see the onset of neuropathy. It is definitely not my field, but it seems too early and to little. Be interesting to see what your HgA1c is.
I have one strong bit of advice - Look to the glycemic scale. Sugar and readily absorbable carbs, and all processed carbs are your enemy. Anything that stimulates insulin production. Type II diabetes is exactly the opposite of Type I. Too much insulin, the cells can't handle it and become resistant. They become unable to absorb the glucose they need and suffer early degeneration.
I'm expecting similar news any time now. In a 6 month binge of self-pity I indulged in every forbidden treat I wanted - the whole ice cream saga - and gained 30 pounds. Now with the steroids, I expect, to see some problems. Yesterday, though, my noon non-fasting was 90 so I'm not there yet, but my mom has it. And I had better restart my low-carb routine and bring my sugars, triglycerides and cholesterol down again before some doctor discovers it and rags on me.

Hey Jaz. That is correct, the drop to 112 was with no food. The 132 when I got up , then 1 hour later it dropped 20 points to the 112 right before I walked into the clinic.
You aren't being a wet blanket you silly girl ;) It wouldn't shock me ONE BIT if they called and said I was diabetic, not at all. As I said, my Mom has it, my grandpa had it, my uncle has it (he's blind from it and VERY sick) and of course, my dear husband has it bad. Our cat was even diagnosed with it 9 years after we got him as a Kitty - now what are the chances of that happening??? LOL - Gawd, even the da** cat!

Well I'm no doctor, but those numbers sure look like diabetes to me, sorry to be a wet blanket. We'll have to see what your doctor says. You are slightly high apon rising, and the drop to 112 was with no food, right, before the test?
So your activity getting ready to go, dropped you the 20 points. This is normal with a diabetic. Your body can't compensate for activity with no added carb, and you can drop low (this number wasn't low though)
Then you had a large spike after being given the glucose and then faded back to normal -safe range after the sugar/carbs left your system.
