Avonex = frequent infections?

I've been on Avonex (injections) for about 5 mos.  It seems like since i've been on it, I have non-stop infections that seem resistant to antibiotics.   The infections & resistance to the antibiotics are new to me.  I was diagnosed 6 mos. ago (after only 1 1/2 yrs. of symptoms) & have a very mild case.  I would very much appreciate any feedback or information.  Thank you!

I happened to see this the other day, it was listed on http://www.themcfox.com/multiple-sclerosis/ms-drugs/avonex/avonex-blood-counts.htm updated 2004, it might be worth finding out if your having a negative reaction and need to change DMD.

Avonex ®  Side Effects
(interferon beta-1a)

Decreased Peripheral Blood Counts

Decreased peripheral blood counts in all cell lines (resulting in a reduced ability to fight infection), including rare pancytopenia (simultaneous decrease in the numbers of red and white blood cells) and thrombocytopenia (reduction in the number of platelets in the blood), have been reported in patients using Avonex ®.

Increased infections is not normally a side effect of Avonex, nor of the other Interferons.  Even if it was, it wouldn't cause antibiotic resistance.

A small number of people can have a low white count on the Interferons.  Your doctor needs to to a CBC - Complete Blood Count - to see if this has happened.  A very low white count (Absolute Neutrophil count below 500) is associated with infections that you can't fight off.  Absolute counts lower than 1000 need to be watched carefully.

A markedly lowered neutrophil count is reason to stop the Interferon, and make sure the counts come back up.

If this isn't the answer, your doctor might consider a referral to an immunologist to see what is happening.

I've been on Avonex for nearly two years, and have had almost no infections. I'll be interested in hearing from others on this drug.

Wishing you well,
