Black dot

Does anyone have a small black dot in their field of vision that doesn't move or go away?  I'm wondering if this is a floater.  Does anyone know if floaters stay fixed in the same spot?  My last bout of ON was in August.  Since then, I've noticed a black dot when I read or look at a computer screen and is quite annoying and makes it harder for me to read.  Any thoughts?

Hi Deb, nice to see you.  I've had both.  Some that have stayed around for awhile, and then the shooting star one's that lasted for the majority of my 1st attack.

I don't have any that stayed for good though. Only the come and go ones.

I could be wrong, but do not believe they are floaters or any natural aging breakdown of the jelly type stuff if it stays "for good."

Is it in the same exact spot?

I'd be curious to know if this can be a residual of ON.  Sounds logical in theory.

Hope others have some info in this area.

I'm glad you're doing better--I was worried about you!  The flu knocked me on my ars a over a month ago.  I'm not exercising yet--building up strength again . . .

That spot in my right eye has been in the same spot ever since the ON.  My vision is still blurry as well, but the recent acuity test says normal.  I can see the letters on the chart, but my brain takes a while, still, processing what I'm seeing.  When I focus for a couple of seconds longer, I can see them clearly.

Hi Deb, I have both floaters and a grey spot in my left eye.  The ophthalmologist I recently saw said  1. yes she could see the floaters and 2. she could see the grey statonary spot.  Shell described exactly what the doc said, the jelly like substance behind the eye can thicken and cause such spots :( Guess it is here to stay.

The black spot is actually on your optic nerve.  It happens after a bout of ON - the optic nerve gets a lesion, so the eye isn't transmitting all the information it's receiving.  It usually reads as a black dot.  Sometimes it'll flare up white, like somebody's lit a match.

I have a black spot in my right eye - it's always in the same spot, lower left of center.  I've had it since my first flare in 07, and it's never gone away.  Mostly I don't notice it.

I have one also.  It was there consistantly while I had ON and now I only notice it when I'm overheated.  Floaters move when you blink and float around in your field of vision and scotomas stay in a fixed spot.  At least that is what my optho told me.

Yes I do have a black spot in my right eye that has never gone away since I had my first bout with Optic Neuritis.  The optho said it was permanent.  I don't "see" it much unless I am looking at a light background.  Like now.

Thanks--I know what to expect with this.  I think eventually, I'll not notice it so much, but because the ON was relatively recently, the spot is something that is quite irritating.  

My vision is still doubled as well--but it is much improved.  Do any of you still have doubled vision?  Plus, I've also noticed that when I'm outside on a warm, sunny day and come in, I cannot see.  I cannot see anything but shapes.  Does this sound familiar to you, too?

I have had ON twice the first time was really bad and I lost my sight for a while in one eye, the second time was not so dramatic and was 5 years ago. The double vision has not really gone, it is really noticeable on bad days when my other sx are worse, but only looks like a ghosting on images on good days.

I also have the black spot but in the lower left hand corner (left eye). I have flashing lights still in a dark room and if I move my head quickly.

I wear dark glasses when the light is bright, in sunshine and on bad days to stop me feeling sick with the double vision.  This also stops the last effect you mentioned of the shapes thing from being too bad.

I don't know if mine is typical - I can only speak from my experience - hopefully yours will get better.

I have double vision in my left eye, especially when I look down.  I also get a weird blurring of both eyes when they get warm - like steam from my hot tea, or sitting in front of a fire.  All quite normal when you have nerve damage in your eyes...
