Ouch! Sorry to hear about your toe.
I think I must've burnt myself a bit and had a delayed reaction--delayed enough that it took me quite a while to put two and two together and I felt kinda stupid when I did. But at least the pain is gone.
I know I should be careful, but it can be hard because there seems to be this real disconnect between what I intellectually think should be painful and what actually bothers me. I sometimes think this is a plus (after I've stubbed my toe), but in reality it's probably more of a danger than a benefit.

I get burning symptoms too but mostly in my legs. They feel like they are on fire. It drives me nuts.
If you did burn yourself with the tap water, you must have not felt it right away which isn't good either. You have to be careful when your sensory stuff is messed up. I had to learn the hard way.
I use to wear toe rings. I always liked them because I live in sandals all summer long. Last year when I started to have symptoms, I was sitting on my couch and a sharp stabbing pain came across my toes out of nowhere. I screamed. Lifted my foot to see what the heck had happened. My toe ring was bent into my toe. There was a pretty good sized hole and from the look of it, it had been that way for days.
For some reason I didn't feel it when it initially happened. I felt it when I was off my feet sitting there. Needless to say I don't wear toe rings anymore.
