Frustration with Dr's Rudeness

Aloha!
Not sure if its me; but I waited 2 months to see a MS specialist. I had to pay for the flight for my husband and I, and the hotel room to see this MS Dr. The Dr came in introduced herself and started reading my chart for about 15 mins. After 5 mins of her reading the information she said 'Excuse me while I go through your chart'. I started looking at my watch thinking how rude she was, then the thought crossed my mind, why didn't she prepare before seeing me, since she knew I was flying over, and that it was a consultation that I was seeing her for.
Is it me or was that plain old rude? Anyone experience this? I tried calling her today to discuss my appt. with her but of course she's off until the 3rd. Dr's are smart and talented, but some really come off as if they think they are god. The consultation didn't go as well as I expected. I have a lot of questions, she told me she was going to continue reading my chart and then put me on a prednisone iv lock for 6 months every other month for my numb hands. Then that was that. Am I wrong for calling her and saying 'hey I didn't like the outcome, and ask her what is going to be done with the other symptoms'.
On her notes she wrote down MS and underlined it many times, my primary care Dr. says its MS, but the run around I am getting is old.

Sorry its long, hopefully it made sense.

Aloha LA,

No worries, I understand loopiness. I do have a Neuro Dr. that listens and types at the same time. He doesn't even look at me while I'm talking, that's real aggravating.
I wish one day we all could find Dr's that were capable of being good, listens, and reviews. I had one tell me it was from smoking,  wear a body sock, and keep my feet up all day..hrmph! One day he'll get the same treatment.

Aloha!

Aloha Mike,

Thank you & Nice to meet you too. I can see where Dr's also have a way of weeding people out. I actually wrote the Dr an email explaining all my sx's and informing her I didn't feel like I didn't get the time deserved. Who knows what will happen with that. I have faith. She is only there 3 days a week, and the only MS specialist w/ Kaiser in the Hawaiian Islands.
I started Nursing school and had to quit because I don't have feeling in my hands. Course they treated me with steroids and the feeling came back. It may be temporary but I just want to go back to school.... sigh...:)

Aloha!

It does stink that you had to travel and then were not given the attention you should have had.  Honestly I have only had ONE good experience with a neurologist and that was at the MS clinic that diagnosed med.

You'd expect the doctor to read the notes but you should also expect him or her to LISTEN to you as well.

I saw a doctor locally who dismissed me.  I traveled several  hours and saw a doctor who told me I was just stressed because of my children.  Now I NEVER said anything about my children.  She just assumed that because she read I have several children here at home. Never mind I had optic neuritis and an abnormal MRI.

I was finally able to get into an MS clinic.  I had to travel again but it was worth it.  I know it is very frustrating. I didn't mean to seem to dismiss the rest of your post. I have been feeling a little loopy here lately, new medication, and just could not get anything else out of my brain.

Hello Mrs Munier,
Nice to meet you. my name is Mike. I have not been DX'ed yet. PCP seems to think MS  not presented, however clean MRI and LP. In regards to your "specialist" visit, it sounds like the first one I had. He was very cold and impersonnal. I did give him a second chance and things went better. I do not think being a male made a difference. His follow up info to my regular neuro included a lot more info than he told me. On the second visit I confronted him about the way I was treated. He explained that it was just a consult and that is how he treats those types of appointments. The second visit I had lasted an hour and a half and all of my questions were answered along with a solid plan of action to figure out what is happening with me.
Good Luck to you. You have found one of the best support places to be as you travel  finding answers.
Bless You,
Mike

Aloha :)

Pleasure to meet er read you:) Wow your Dr. & your MRI is amazing. I know they are busy, and have many people with so many different problems. Although, I wonder what it takes to be heard. Do we have to be men or more authoritative? One Dr. I finally said my stomach hurts, you don't feel it, after being told for 14 years that I had a emotional stomach. He did a scope and found 4 bleeding ulcers, he said 'wow you are in pain' Hrmph!

I contacted my General Practitioner today, who said the Dr. said I do have MS. Why didn't she tell me, I'm the patient.

GRRRR..
Thank you for your support, and the welcome. It's amazing what we all go through just to get a correct answer. 5 years and I don't know how many eye surgeries for a friend of mine. Scary.

Aloha!

I can certainly agree about the Dr reading your chart during than before and getting confused. I would want the same too. Although, I think the way she came off was rude, and kinda arrogant.

I believe she spent more time reading my records than paying attention to my concerns.

Thanks for your response, I can see your point

Aloha back at ya!  I don't believe we have had the pleasure of speaking but I would like to introduce myself and offer a little insight!  My name is Rena and I was first diagnosed with MS in 1993 via a positive MRI and a positive LP.  Since that time until last year my disease was in remission and I didn't seem to have many problems.  Then in July of last year I began having symptoms and was already being seen by the most ignorant MS Specialist for a diagnosis of Paratrigeminal Neuralgia in the preceding Feb.  In March I had a CT Scan and after that this MS Specialist always referred to the CT Scan as an MRI!  I told him constantly that he had not done an MRI on me since 1993 and he continued to ignore my claims until I presented with severe double vision in November.  At that time he was looking through my chart and I asked him what he was looking for?  He replied "I am looking for your MRI results!!  WHAT A MORONIC MEDICAL SPECIALIST EH???  I told him AGAIN that I haven't had an MRI since 1993 and he promptly booked me for one a few days later.

Having an egotistical MS Specialist is really not new around here but it doesn't make it any less frustrating...we here on the forum understand how you feel.  I personally have since changed to a new "MS Specialist" and it has done me no good whatsoever but I hope that with your perserverance you will get results.  Being pro-active is very important when dealing with any healthcare situation in this day and age and it sounds as though you are not prepared to give up because of a dr. that has given you the cold shoulder...keep it up honey and let that dr. know that you are not satisfied and just what you expected and that you want to know why you didn't get what you required!

We are behind you 100% my dear and while it can be a long and frustrating road, please know that you can always come back here and vent your frustrations and we will lend you an ear!

Lots of Hugs,

Rena

After I thought about this a little more I think doctors probably don't have a lot of extra time to read through charts before they see a patient.

They see several people in one day and from my point of view I'd rather have my doctor read through my information on the spot rather than getting me mixed up with someone else.

As long as the doctor reads all of the information in my chart then I am happy.  I had one who didn't read all of my information.  :(

Well, about the note reading, what you described has been exactly how my appointments have gone.  My chart was not reviewed before I arrived at the appointment.

I guess I have never been to a doctor who has done it any differently as far as I remember.

I do have a dx of MS.

If you still have questions you SHOULD call back and get them answered.
