Gabapentin and Pregablin

Gabapentin and Pregablin

Hi Everyone

I know that there have been posts in the past about these two drugs but I am just interested to hear some feedback about weight gain.  I have been on Gabaeantin for 6 months and am getting on fine with it and have recently reduced the dosage back down to 900mg from 1200mg with my Consultant's permission as my symptoms have improved.

However I have been trying quite hard to lose some weight and have lost half a stone but now seem stuck. I have been exercising more than every before (going 2 x a week to gym and swim) and am eating very healthily. So me thinks it is most likely the combinatisom on of gabapentin/amitryptiline that is causing that tummy to stay the same shape.

When I was on the trial yesterday there was a lady there having some treatment and she said she switched from gabapentin to pregabilin (lyrica) and this stopped her putting weight on.

Anyone else with similar experiences and also have any of you been able to stop taking either of these drugs because of improved symptoms

Sarah

Hi There,
I put on a load of wieght while on Gabapentin. I was on 1800mg a day and put on a stone over 4 months! I have now swapped to pregabalin and I am beginning to lose the weight. I changed drug because the Gabapentin was not controling my symptoms enough nothing to do with the weight gain, I am now on 400mg of Pregabalin and I am try to lose the weight I have gained so far I have lost half a stone in about three weeks.

I know that there are many people who feel that Pregabalin also makes them put on weight.
Hope this helps

Hi Sarah,

I use Gaba and gained 20 pounds in the first 6 months now.  I don't know what that means in stones.

I don't know about amitryptiline

If  the Lyrica is helping people maintain or even lose weight I am going to ask for it.

Please keep us posted, it will be interesting to find out what everyone else says.

Hi Sarah,

I have been on lyrica now for 4 yrs and gained about 25lbs so I guess its either weight gain or pain we have to deal with

Sarah,

I was on gabapentin and gained about 20 pounds, I stopped taking it due to tighness in chest everytimg I was taking it. My doctor put me on lyrica and it works great for me. It also has a side affect of weight gain but I haven't seen a weight gain, in fact I have been losing weight, but I am also dieting.
