The simplest explanation is that the outer portion of the cerebrum is the cortex, what you hear called "gray matter". The subcortical is below the cortex. Did that help or confuse you more?

Why do MRI reports refer to subcortical white matter . . . isn't that redundant (sp?)?
I'm pretty sure there are other subcortical regions besides the white matter regions - the hypothalamus I think is an example. There are so many areas of the brain - fascinating since it is really not that big an organ. Jam-packed though! Wish I remembered more from college - I may have to do some brushing up!
