How do I recieve the meds I need?

I am going to see a new neurologist today, as the one I have does not have a new appt. until february, and is unreachable for a month b/c he's on vacation!!!  My number one complaint, as far as my many many symptoms go, is PAIN.  mostly neck, back, and arms, but sometimes knees, feet, hands, and face.  I have repeatedly told this to dr.s, but for some reason they keep treating me as a drug seeking addict, and  then prescribe NSAIDS, which, so far, have not helped at all.  Am I asking the wrong way?  Am I missing something?  How do I get them to believe that I really am in severe pain almost every day, and moderate pain every other day?  I NEED pain management, as it is not only taking it's toll on me physically, but mentally and emotionally, as well.  Any suggestions?

I take Lyrica, mainly for Restless Leg Syndrome, but my MS specialist increased my dosage when I had that flair and all the arm pain, and it really seemed to help.
Hopefully it will help you, too.

Still wishing you the best of luck!

I am so sorry to hear that your doctor will not give you pain medication.  I have had three different neurologist and everyone of them always provided me with pain medication.  This disease causes alot of pain and they know that....and NSAIDS are not strong enough to stop our pain.  My pain has gotten so bad that I have to go and sit/stand in a scalding shower to get a little relieve, and then I usually have to take sleep medication.

My suggestion would be to find a MS specialist, and I now for the first time have a female neurologist and she seems to be more compassionate and understanding to my disease.  I hope you find some help soon.

I am praying for you,
Lori

Good suggestion.... I went to the new neuro today, and he, like the rest, tried to shoo me out with nothing. But, I protested!  So, he did prescribe Lyrica and Darvocet.  I've had Darv. before and it barely helped, but who knows what will happen with the Lyrica.  That one will be new for me.  I go next Thurs. for a Lumbar Puncture, and then back to the dr. in one month.  If for whatever reason, these drugs do not work, then I'll save the embarrassment of asking for something stronger, and just ask for a referral.  There are several pain clinics around here, so that may definitely be an option.  Hopefully, I'll just get it under control.  Wish me luck!

Is there a pain clinic you can go to?  Sometimes doctors that are afraid of prescribing pain medications will gladly refer you to a pain clinic, where they can help you figure out what kind of pain medication or treatment will best suit the pain that you are having.

I had a wonderfully helpful doctor at a pain clinic, though he has since retired.  He helped figure out some pain issues that others had been at a loss to understand.  He prescribed some muscle relaxants (more powerful than I was used to), and sent me to a wonderful physical therapist.

A good pain specialist will know whether you're experiencing nerve pain and know what to prescribe for it, etc.

The Pain Clinic available to me now even has a therapist on staff to help out people dealing with chronic pain issues.

Well, that's my two cents.  Best of luck,

Kathy
