How strange is this one?

Hey Guys and Dolls,

I had a rather weird thing happen last night, I know I know, I'm the queen of weird lol. It was so out of the blue, painful and as I said weird that I wondered if its happened to anyone else. I'd bought a house warming pressie for our daughter and was showing hubby what we'd bought her, it only just squeesed into the decorative box and with the hot hot summer heat the candles had squashed a bit. When i saw what had happened to the candles, i pointed with my pointer finger and I felt an incredible pain in the middle of that arm.

I reacted by grabbing my arm where it hurt and only then noticed that my ring finger had folded over and was stuck to my palm. I tried to straighten the finger whilst still holding the spot that was killing me (it felt like i'd been stabbed), my hand was in a full cramp like feet can do, stuck and I had to use my other hand to straighten it, and hold it straight because if I let go it sprang back into a contorted mess.

It hurt hurt hurt, not sure which hurt more, the arm stabbing pain or the hand cramped up, hmmm probably the arm because once i'd got my hand and finger sorted the pain went away but the arm kept on hurting for a while. Oh as this was happening i must of disconnected my brain balance system and didn't realise i'd wobbled backwards until the wall was supporting me lol.

See weird! All i did was point my pointer finger and bam, so anyone ever had this happen to them? I still cant work out why or how, really strange. My brother thought it sounded like the tendon had contracted and i was thinking it was possibly nerve related, so any other ideas?

Cheers.........JJ

Sounds like a muscle spasm to me - I get them in my feet, mostly.  It goes along with spasticity, which also sounds like something you're dealing with.

Hmmm yes i'm well aware i'm totally mental but i dont dwell on it lol!

Interesting ideas, i'd never heard of 'trigger finger' though it made me day-dream of my dr saying ahh yes JJ you have a trigger finger, the only solution is to give your husband back the remote ROFL!

I looked it up and it doesnt fit with what i experienced, though Mary i get why you thought of it. It was definitely my arm that hurt first (and continued after my hand straightened up), dh mentioned he saw me grab my arm but i'd also clenched my hand into a fist at the same time, I didn't even notice i'd done that, it must of been a reflex reaction from the pain.

I'd actually thought i'd some how torn the muscle off the bone again (i've done that to both arms, 3 times in total lol) same type of screaming 'OH MY GOD' type of pain. I really expected the burning to start but It didn't, hmmm i was a tad shocked when i saw my finger still stuck to my hand so not surprised i'd missed it. I do get cramps in my right hand occasionally (I hate cramps) and i could possibly have clenched hard enough to set it off though i didn't even know i was doing it at the time cause my arm was killing me lol.

Lately i've been getting this line of ???, I can't call it pain as such more like a feeling of something inside my arm has pulled really tight across the arm though i usually only feel this when i'm carrying something, and it only started after doing the muscle of the bone trick. Lately its been happening anytime it feels like doing it hmmmmm Its the same spot about half way along, on the under side of the arm, between the elbow to the wrist approx the same place only this time it wasn't across the arm but dead centre and sharp, instant and hurty hurty lol.

I dont know, its just possible its all connected to the muscle probs (again), lets face it the muscles in my body seem to have forgotten what the rules of the body are lol.

Thanks for the input!!!

Cheers..........JJ

I have hand spasms, where my hand contorts but they are not painful like that. JemmAus made me giggle a little. It sounded like she was accusing the candles!

Well I hope that your arm and and feel better and that doesn't happen again. No more pointing at candles! (Jokiing!)

I wanted to wait until someone else posted on this before I did.  I have the same thing kind of in my left hand.  All my fingers...not my thumb...cramp into a fist and then my wrist curls in a little too.  I told my neurologist about it, but he didn't really seem concerned about it at the time.

It is quite painful though!

Good luck and I hope you feel better!

I don't know about the arm pain but the finger sounds like you could have a 'trigger' finger (otherwise known as stenosing tenosynovitis).  It usually results from repeititive movement rather than any nerve involvement.   It happens when the tendon, or the sheath it passes through as the fingers move, gets inflammed and then 'sticks' as it passes through the sheath.  It can be very painful.

I've had many a steroid shot to coax these back into a calm state.  I've had to resort to surgery on several fingers for a permanent solution.  It is weird.  Sometimes just grazing the tip of the finger can make the whole thing curl up or snap down into the palm.

Maybe you're mental? HA sorry. Sounds like cramp - ALTHOUGH I do recall having massive hand spasms in the 80s when my twins were babies. I'd get them like that after wringing out the nappies (cloth ones back then). So many nappies for so many months and the Dr said I had RSI (repetitive strain injury) from it! Hence the cramps, apparently.

So there's another idea to add to the list, though I dunno if one can get RSI from pointing at candles....
