shooting pains in my back

I think my shooting pains up and down my back, are due to arthritis. My mom has arthritis in her back too and she says she also has shooting pains. My neuro agreed. Said it couln't be MS, but she did say I have alot of lesions on my spine! Could lesions also cause shooting pains??  Karina

Both arthritis, from any cause and spinal cord problems can cause the type of pain you describe.  All of the nerves that go to the trunk, arms and legs, run in the spine.  At each level some run out between the vertebrae to carry signals out and bring information and sensations back.  I don't see why it couldn't be from MS.... all the nerves that go to the back run in the spine also.

Lesions in the spine are likely to be symptomatic than the ones in the brain.  This is becasue there are a lot of the areas in the brain that don't have an obvious purpose, so when they are damaged we don't notice a problem.  However ALL of the nerves running up and down in the spine have a distinct functional area they serve.  Lesions there really show up with symptoms.

I don't know, but wanted to "bump" up your post so maybe someone else can give you some advice on that.

It seems like those of us who have back issues are always getting the back Sx muddied up with the MS Sx.  Very frustrating!
